OUR WORKSHOPS AT YOUR SERVICE

At the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, theory meets practice: learning and practical projects carried out with open minds and courage are key to our teaching methods. 

The variety of workshop environments maintained by the skilled staff at our school enable experiments with materials, methods and processes to be part of learning, research and artistic activity. In each workshop, a workshop master who is expert in the field gives instruction on the use of the equipment and tools and provides advice on working methods. The close cooperation between the workshop masters and the teaching staff ensure a unique learning experience.

The weaving workshop is a learning, creation and research environment for the structures of woven textiles.

Knitting

In the Knitting Workshop, students and researchers can design and produce various knitted fabrics and products. Hand-operated knitting machines as well as an industrial flat-bed knitting machine are available for use.

Textile printing

In the Textile Printing Workshop there are opportunities to colour and pattern textiles by dyeing, painting, hand printing and digital textile printing. The courses organized in the workshop prepare students for professional development, give them mastery of techniques and teach them to work safely with chemicals.

Biofilia

Biofilia is a biological art unit which provides a platform for trans-disciplinary research and education. It provides artists, researchers, students and scholars with the ability to engage with the life sciences and their applications within an artistic and cultural context, thus making creative and critical links between biosciences, engineering and the arts.

Waterjet Cutting

Waterjet cutting is a digitally controlled working method which can be used to cut almost any kind of solid material, such as metals, rock, concrete, glass, ceramic, wood or plastics. It is mainly used for furniture and object design and for artistic activities. Waterjet cutting offers to students, researchers and teachers the space, equipment and technical personnel for creating prototypes and engaging in artistic activities and short-run production using numerous different materials.

NC machining

The NC Machining/Processing Workshop is a learning environment for digital model production as well as an expert source of numerical machining/processing methods. A five-axle processing centre for wood and model building materials, three-axle machining centre for metals, and NC lathe are available.

In the Paint Shop, students, researchers and teachers can paint and apply surface treatments to prototypes or models. It is possible to paint with a syringe, roller, brush or apply spray coatings there.

The Surfacing and Chemicals Workshop has the facilities and equipment required for work involving a range of chemicals, such as performing mold making and castings in various polymers such as silicones and resintypes as well as patination of metal alloys.

The Aalto University Glass Workshop is the most efficient, and well-rounded educational facility in Finland. It allows for experimentation with every possible glass forming technique, including hot glass blowing and sculpting, cutting/grinding/polishing, kilnforming (fusing, slumping, casting), and flameworking.

In Printlab’s Fine-Art Printing service you can make high-quality prints of photographs and graphics on the best museum-quality materials.
Printlab has the latest pigment-based large format printers with print width up to 160 cm. To use the service, you need to make a reservation. The master printer/workshop master provides assistance.

Construction

Construction Workshop

The Construction Workshop is a research and learning environment and an expert in building and materials for architectural models, buildings and building parts or scale models.

The Construction Workshop offers students, researchers and teachers the space, equipment and staff they need to create prototypes and artistic activities. The main working areas are tasks related to architectural teaching and research.

The construction workshop includes a woodworking hall, metalwork hall as well as an assembly area equipped with hand tools. There is a paint shop for surface treatment which can be used for brush and spray painting.

Otaniemi campus has two darkrooms, designed for the development of photos and black-and-white films, which can be booked for course teaching activities and for use by students.

In addition to shared IT classes, Aalto ARTS offers a wide range of workstation environments, including various video editing units, 3D-modelling units, a colour-managed IT class and editing room, and other special facilities as well as expertise in all your IT needs.

Väre Takeout is an equipment lending service with diverse AV and IT equipment. Nowadays part of Aalto Studios. Studies and research have the highest priority in our operation, but everyone in Aalto community is welcome to use our services.

Transportation

The School of Arts, Design and Architecture owns a VW van, which can be borrowed. Additionally, Aalto offers campus bikes.
