The Department of Civil Engineering aims to build the structures of tomorrow through research, education and collaboration. The department is built around its strengths in system knowledge, computation, modelling and knowledge management.
The department conducts both basic scientific research as well as applied research, both of which are required for high-quality education at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
At the Department of Civil Engineering, we use our expertise to create multidisciplinary, solution-oriented approaches and solutions in cooperation with domestic and international partners who represent a variety of fields.
Research at the department is backed by extensive facilities and focused on building design and construction as well as mineral-based materials and mechanics. The department cooperates with industry on a number of important topics, including construction management, concrete technology, indoor air quality science and technology and geoengineering.
The Performance in Building Design and Construction group aims to realise the potential performance gains offered by accelerating technological and process development.
Developing new industrial solutions and innovations needed in the design, manufacturing and maintenance of civil engineering applications reliant on mineral-based materials. The target is to ensure the strength, durability and sustainability of solids and structures in the built environment.

Our research holds a prominent position in the education we offer. Learn more about studying at the Department of Civil Engineering through the programmes below.
In Computational Engineering, you’ll learn to simulate the behaviours of physical objects, fluids and gases to solve real-world problems.
As one of the top-ranked programmes in its field, the Master’s Programme in Geoengineering provides world-class education in the disciplines of geotechnics, rock mechanics, highway engineering and construction. As geoengineering is a discipline involved with soil and rock, working as the primary basis for our built environment, one could call it the hidden science of everyday life. Simultaneously, Geoengineering graduates play a key role in urbanisation and circular economy, fighting climate change and the growing use of natural resources. Thanks to their highly appreciated knowledge and skills, as well as the programme’s close collaboration with the industry, graduates tend to find great job opportunities with ease.
Building technology is at the core of designing and constructing both safe and sustainable living environments of tomorrow.
The need of mineral-based materials is growing globally, partly related to the new green technology. Applications such as windmills and electric vehicles need traditional metals, but also many high-tech metals that support the environmentally sustainable future. Re-use of metals is important part in the materials cycle, but it will not satisfy the increasing demand of metals. Minerals need to be extracted from the earth’s crust far into the future. The European Mining Course (EMC) aims to train experts who possess wide-ranging skills and abilities to respond to this demand.
