I am the associate professor (tenured) in ice mechanics in Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering. My research focus is in numerical ice mechanics and failure processes of sea ice and my work can be applied on estimating ice loads on modern offshore structures, such as offshore wind turbines, and on studies on the impact of wind energy production on ice-covered sea areas. I also aim to link measurable, engineering-scale, mechanical behavior of sea ice to large-scale sea ice dynamics, important for understanding the effects of climate change on sea ice. An important part of my research in in active development of discrete element method-based numerical tools for ice mechanics, but I also perform experiments in to understand ice failure processes in detail or to validate numerical models. My research has a strong basis in solid and applied mechanics. I have taught numerous courses on engineering mechanics and ice engineering.
