Accessibility statement – Aalto Materials Digitalization Platform (AMAD)

Aalto University's Aalto Materials Digitalization platform (AMAD) is subject to the EU's accessibility directive, the aim of which is to ensure equality in a digitalized society and set uniform requirements for accessibility. 

The platform's accessibility standard is WCAG 2.1, level AA. The requirements of the Directive have been taken into account in the development of the application, and the work continues. The information in this statement is based on accessibility assessment on self-assessment with consulting the external developers of the platform.

State of digital accessibility

Aalto University is committed to observing accessibility standards. The following measures are implemented in order to achieve this goal:

  • accessibility is part of our mission statement,
  • accessibility has been taken into account in the university practices,
  • a member of staff has been appointed to be responsible for accessibility at the university.

Aalto University's objective is to maintain a mobile application that is technically accessible and understandable in terms of its contents and that is clear and easy to use for all types of users. 

AMAD platform largely meets the WCAG 2.1 AA-level requirements for accessibility. AMAD requires further improvements in the following areas according to WCAG 2.1 AAguidelines:

  • 1.4.4 Resize text: AMAD supports the use of standard zoom capabilities built into modern web browsers. However, there are a few instances where text is clipped or inaccessible when zoomed.
  • 1.4.10 Reflow: User-generated notebook can be arbitrarily long in the vertical direction. Documentation pages also exceed the vertical length limits. 
  • 1.4.11 Non-Text Contrast: Contrast in user-generated graphical objects cannot be enforced.

  • 2.1.1 Keyboard: AMAD has few instances of content that is not operable through a keyboard.

  • 2.1.2 No Keyboard Trap: A few instances were discovered where the user could not navigate away from focused elements using only a keyboard.

  • 2.4.1 Bypass Blocks: There is no mechanism available to bypass blocks of content that are repeated on multiple Web pages. 

  • 2.4.2 Page Titled: A few pages do not include titles that describe the topic or purpose.

  • 2.4.3 Focus Order: AMAD uses a logical tab order and consistent keyboard keys to perform actions. Some components use inconsistent or non-normative keyboard controls.

  • 2.4.5 Multiple Ways: Some AMAD pages can only be operated with a mouse pointer.
  • 2.4.7 Focus Visible: AMAD uses visual changes to elements to indicate the current focus position. There are instances where a state change happens but does not include a visible focus indicator. There are other instances where the default browser focus ring is present and may lack sufficient contrast.
  • 2.5.3 Label in Name: The “name” attribute is not specified for all elements.
  • 3.1.2 Language of Parts: AMAD uses the language attribute on the HTML element to specify the default language of a page. However, there is no mechanism to specify different languages for subsets of a page. For example, if a user were to enter a comment in a different language.
  • 3.3.3 Error Suggestion: AMAD provides suggestions for how to mitigate input errors when possible. However, the identification and description of an error is not combined programmatically to help assistive technologies to identify an error and provide remedy suggestions to the user.

  • 4.1.1 Parsing: AMAD uses a logical tab order and consistent keyboard keys to perform actions. Some components use inconsistent or non-normative keyboard controls.

  • 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value: AMAD has some instances where the name, role, or value cannot be programmatically determined or set.

  • 4.1.3 Status Messages: Some status messages cannot be programmatically determined. However, they are not implemented with markup, but with scripts.
