Curriculum design at Aalto University
Aalto University’s curriculum design guidelines and schedule aims at supporting sustainable, future led degree programmes.
The period model currently in use and other teaching structures have been examined in the 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 academic years from the viewpoint of smooth study progress. The examination was led by the vice president for education and the schools’ deans and vice deans for education. The five-period model was found to contribute to the flow of studies and efficient use of the academic year. The entire Aalto community is committed to developing our programmes and teaching using the five-period structure.
As of the 2022–2023 academic year, the start and end dates of periods have been slightly changed to allow examination periods to be held during the autumn and winter holiday weeks and to take account of the effect of springtime public holidays on the number of teaching dates. For instance, the spring holiday is from the Thursday before Easter to the following Wednesday.
The organisation of teaching in the School of Business Mikkeli unit for the Bachelor’s Programme in International Business does not comply with the Aalto five-period model. Instead, their academic year is divided into three-week modules.
In Periods I to IV, the last week is always an evaluation week, in which a variety of methods are employed to assess learning. There are in addition two separate evaluation periods in the autumn term used mainly for examinations. The courses taught in Period V should preferably be ones where the examination does not heavily contribute to the overall assessment, as the examination week will partly or fully take place in June. If a course is compulsory and only one course implementation of it is organised, it should not be scheduled for the summer.
