Language requirements in Master's admissions

The language of instruction at Aalto University is Finnish, Swedish or English.

To be eligible to apply, applicants are required to be proficient in the language of instruction of the study option they are applying for, and to demonstrate this proficiency. When necessary, they may have to pass a language test. The language test scores must meet the minimum requirements set by Aalto University.

Proof of English proficiency

If you apply to a Master's programme taught in English, you must demonstrate your proficiency in English with an accepted proof of language proficiency.

The majority of Aalto University’s master’s programmes are taught in English.
Check the language of instruction for your study option on the study option's web page.

If your study option has several languages of instruction, you need to demonstrate language proficiency in only one of the languages. Particularly the study options in the field of art, design, and architecture may have several languages ​​of instruction.

See the accepted methods to demonstrate your language proficiency in English below.
The list includes first:

  1. language tests, and then
  2. other methods of demonstrating language skills.

No methods other than those listed below are accepted to demonstrate English language skills.

Applications without the required proof of language proficiency will be rejected.

Only the methods listed above to demonstrate English proficiency are accepted. 

Any alternative tests, studies in English in a country not listed above, or statements regarding language skills issued by teachers will not be accepted. There are no exceptions to these language requirements. 

Official language test scores and all documents to demonstrate your English proficiency must be received by Aalto University by the provided deadlines. These deadlines are strict and cannot be extended. 

Proof of Finnish or Swedish proficiency

Applicants are required to be proficient in the language of instruction of their study option.

As the majority of Aalto University’s master’s programmes are taught in English, applicants to English-taught programmes do not need to demonstrate Finnish or Swedish skills.

Applying to master’s programmes

Admissions to two-year master’s programmes at Aalto University are once a year.
The application period for studies beginning in the autumn of 2025 runs from 28 November to 27 December 2024.
