Film screening and Q&A: Spectacular Specimen

Spectacular Specimen is an exploration of our relationship with the sea, blending experimental essayistic film and observational documentary on marine research. The film will be presented in September as part of Designs for a Cooler Planet. After the film screening, the audience can join a panel discussion and Q&A where the film director Mónica Celeste and Associate Professor of Environmental Geology Saija Saarni will delve into the themes of the movie and answer audience questions. Spectacular Specimen is an exploration of our relationship with the sea, blending experimental essayistic film and observational documentary on marine research. The film juxtaposes playfulness alongside the categorising precision of natural science, seeking to diversify its often alienating gaze.

After the screening, 30 minutes will be reserved for a discussion with the director Mónica Celeste and Saija Saarni, Associate Professor of Environmental Geology. The film was made as part of the director's thesis for their master's degree in Creative Sustainability Studies.

Saija Saarni is Associate Professor of Applied Environmental Geology at the University of Turku, where she studies the impact of climate and environmental change on the accumulation conditions in the water bodies. An ongoing research project in the Archipelago Sea is investigating the factors that control the deposition rate of microplastics.

Mónica Celeste is a Helsinki-based Finnish-Costa Rican filmmaker and artist whose work explores boundaries in the more-than-human world. In their practice, they explore, blur and uncover the edges and layerings of social, cultural, ecological, and economic systems to unveil and dismantle oppressive structures. Mónica’s work is driven by a deep curiosity about the porousness of the body, inviting audiences to consider new possibilities for coexistence and collective flourishing.
