From Lab to Market x FCAI – Innovation Around Artificial Intelligence
Join us at the From Lab to Market event to discover three different stories of how to create radical innovation with and around artificial intelligence to solve real-life problems, shared by scientists turned entrepreneurs and innovators themselves!
How to create impact out of research? How to turn your research into action? Could I, should I, commercialize my research? Do I have to leave academia, can I ever return? What does science-based entrepreneurship or academic entrepreneurship mean?
These questions among many others related to the area of research to impact are being pondered by many researchers and academics. Exchange thoughts over a cup of coffee on how to create impact from research and network across disciplines and organizations.
Meet the speakers:
Yu Xiao is an assistant professor at Aalto University, School of Electrical Engineering. She received a doctoral degree in computer science from Aalto University in 2012. Since 2016, she has been leading the mobile cloud computing group which focuses on experimental systems research and technological innovation in the fields of mobile and wearable computing. She has served as PI/co-PI in 3 Business Finland funded research to business projects and is a co-founder of VimAI Oy, a spin-off from Aalto University.
Marko Laakso graduated in 2012 with a doctorate in philosophy from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Helsinki. Through the research and tools created in the research group, they ended up creating a spinoff company, Significo Research. They specialized in data analysis and worked closely with Valuemotive, which focuses on actual software production and data management. In 2014, Marko started as a partner of Valuemotive where he has been working in software production, data analysis to sales, and product development coordination.
Joonas Paalasmaa is a Director of Engineering at Wolt, working with teams that optimize the different aspects of Wolt's complex delivery operation: customer support tools, courier route optimization, supply/demand balancing, restaurant tooling, etc. From 2007, he worked in the sleep measurement startup Beddit, eventually as CTO. Apple acquired Beddit in 2017 and Joonas moved to California to work in Apple's Health Technologies group. In 2019, he moved back to Finland to join Wolt. Scientific and medical credibility was a part of the Beddit strategy, which allowed Joonas to do a Ph.D. on sleep measurement at University of Helsinki, graduating in 2014.
