Welcome to next installment of the Greatest Phycisists in History lecture series, organized by the Physics Alumni ry and the Finnish Physical Society, this time in collaboration with the Department of Applied Physics at Aalto University.

Join us on November 27 for a fascinating look at one of the greatest physicists to ever live!

The lecture is free to attend for all. To help us reserve the right amount of refreshments, sign up for on-site participation with the link below by November 19.

Topic

Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1997) has been called the “Queen of Nuclear Research” and the “First Lady of Physics” for her trailblazing achievements in science. She was an experimental physicist whose work reshaped our understanding of the physical world.

This talk will focus on Wu’s contributions to nuclear physics, covering her pioneering beta-decay studies, contributions to the Manhattan Project and her most famous experiment, the “Wu experiment”. The experiment was groundbreaking as it showed that the parity is violated in weak interactions. The discovery was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957 but it was given only to Wu's theory colleagues Lee and Young.

Chien-Shiung Wu's legacy is not only marked by her scientific achievements but also by her advocacy for women in science, making her an enduring inspiration for future generations.

Lecturer

Professor Anu Kankainen is a nuclear physicist working in the JYFL Accelerator Laboratory at the University of Jyväskylä. Her researcher focuses on studies of ground-state properties of exotic nuclei and their relevance for nucleosynthesis in stars.
