Modelling for Power to X fuels
Featuring:
Martti Larmi | Aalto University
Annukka Santasalo-Aarnio | Aalto University
Fabricio Oliviera | Aalto University
This event looks at some of the questions concerning both the production and utilization of fuels produced by power to fuels processes taking the example of Methanol. These fuels have a critical role to play in the decarbonization of the transport sector. A range of possibilities exist. Firstly, direct use of hydrogen produced by electrolysis from renewable electricity. Further, processing of this hydrogen, together with carbon dioxide, to produce “drop in” fuels which can be used in existing or modified combustion engines. These fuels thus offer both a form of energy storage for excess renewable electricity, and the production of carbon neutral, energy dense fuels that can be applied in the most challenging transport applications such as, heavy goods vehicles, shipping and aviation.
By bringing together experts on both production and utilization, this event aims to give a big picture view on power to fuels, with the particular focus on Methanol. Annukka Santasalo-Aarnio, will focus on modelling of Methanol production to enhance process efficiency. Martti Larmi will consider the modelling of the combustion of Methanol in internal combustion engines. The audience will thus gain an understanding of some of the key challenges and opportunities in relation to this fuel.
This event should be attractive to those interested in the fields of energy transition, sector coupling, combustion technology and transport decarbonisation.
This event is part of the Energy Modelling event series organized by Aalto Networking Platform.
This event is held in Zoom, please register here.
This event is the fourth of Aalto Networking Platform's monthly energy modelling seminar series in 2021.
How can energy modelling drive the sustainable energy transition?
How can we create models of future energy systems that can be used by policymakers, industry and societal stakeholders? How can we best design modelling exercises to steer the sustainable energy transition?
This series aims to look at the different aspects of modelling for energy systems, through technical modelling, analysis, and building of systems. The seminars will bring together guest speakers from industry with Aalto researchers to tackle these questions. Each event in the series will treat a discrete field of modelling.
