NODUS TALKS Mediating Vacant Spaces
NODUS TALKS series is organized by the NODUS Sustainable Design Research Group of Aalto University, bringing together researchers and practitioners on topics relevant to design, innovation and sustainability. For March 2022, presenters Hella Hernberg and Elina Alatalo discuss Mediating Vacant Spaces, followed by a panel discussion, both held in English.
Hella Hernberg is an architect and researcher at NODUS, whose upcoming doctoral thesis investigates the roles of mediators in the temporary use of vacant spaces in Finland and Europe, partly based on practice-based research of her own work. In this talk, she will share key findings from her research, discussing how mediators broker between actors, negotiate structural conditions and build capabilities for temporary use.
Elina Alatalo is an architect and activist doing her PhD in environmental policy as part of the Insurgent spatial practices collective at Tampere University. She will share her experience on mediating co-creation with a high level of self-organization in the case of building a public sauna to a former industrial site in Hiedanranta, Tampere.
The event is free but please register to get access to the online event.
