peripheries in parallax: BRAVE NEW PERIPHERIES
peripheries in parallax: BRAVE NEW PERIPHERIESis a series of four 1-day online Conferences mapping out the implications and alliances of ‘peripheries’ and ‘peripheral approaches’ through art, artistic research and related fields in society. The 1-day Conferences and Art Events (with related online openings) take place in four days during Spring 2021. Each event focuses on specific sub-theme.
22nd January PERIPHERAL SITES, SENSES AND SENSIBILITIES
26th February MATERIAL PERIPHERIES
12th March POLITICS OF PERIPHERIES
9th April PERIPHERAL ECOLOGIES
peripheries in parallax: BRAVE NEW PERIPHERIES examines peripheries as concrete or immaterial fields, approaches, phenomenon, practices or epistemologies that are in different ways framed as ‘marginal’ in relation to presupposed ‘central’/’centralized’ systems and mediated global assumptions.
We seek new understanding of peripheries and peripherality through cross-exposures in arts, artistic research and related fields and disciplines. We invite approaches from several disciplines where the spatial, conceptual and theoretical hierarchies and biased assumptions of ‘peripheries’ or ‘peripheralities’ are challenged within the disciplines themselves, as well as in relation to each other.
Alongside the 1-day Conferences, a durational, curated Art Event peripheries in parallax: ‘MATTER’ - From Actual Presence to Virtual Representationtakes place at the Aalto University Campus.
MATTER is an exhibition in four parts. MATTER will concretely and conceptually take place between the inside and the outside of institutions both at the Aalto University Campus and at the online conference series peripheries in parallax: BRAVE NEW PERIPHERIES. MATTER is asking the question of openness and accessibility in between virtual and actual presences, and challenging the participating artists to place their works into an open situation of unsureness.
