Public Defence in Mechatronics, M.Sc. Mikael Miettinen
Gas lubrication is commonly used in precision and high-speed applications due to its low friction and high positioning accuracy. A challenge for the wider use of gas lubrication is the tolerance requirements of bearing and sealing surfaces.
This dissertation addresses challenges in gas lubrication in externally pressurized seals and bearings. The dissertation experimentally investigates the performance of bearings and seals and develops modelling methods for bearing and seal performance. A bearing solution is proposed that would allow the use of air lubrication in new applications where traditional tolerance requirements cannot be met. The performance of the proposed bearing solution is verified experimentally.
