Professor Esa Kallio, Department of Electronics and NanoengineeringSpace research and new technology
Esa Kallio (born 1965, Finland) received his Ph.D. degree in space physics from Helsinki University, Finland, in 1996. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, during 1996–1997. Before joining Aalto University in 2014 as an Associate Professor, Kallio worked at Finnish Meteorological Institute and University of Helsinki (2008–2009, Prof.). He was an Academy Research Fellow in 2001–2007.
In his research, Kallio focuses on space plasma physical processes near different Solar System object: Mercury, Venus, the Earth, the Moon, Mars, planetary moons, comets and asteroids. He is a Co-Investigator of space instruments on several ESA’s planetary missions (Mars Express, Venus Express, Rosetta, Bepi Colombo, JUICE). Kallio was also leading Suomi 100 nanosatellite project. In particular, Kallio has focused to develop and to use numerical simulations to interpret particle and electromagnetic field observations. He has authored and co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles on space plasma physics, space plasma simulations, space instrumentation and small satellites.

Professor Katri Kauppi, Department of Information and Service ManagementManaging interorganisational relationships – a case of hidden action or hidden expectations
Katri Kauppi (née Karjalainen, born in 1982, Finland) obtained her D.Sc. (Econ.) in the field of logistics from the Helsinki School of Economics in 2009. She was the youngest female doctoral graduate of the school. After graduation, Katri worked as an Assistant Professor in Operations Management, first at Manchester Business School and then at Nottingham University School of Business. Katri returned to Aalto in 2012.
In November 2014, Katri Kauppi received the World Culture Council Special Recognitions Award, given to talented early career researchers, who have had international impact through their research. This was due to e.g. her work with the European Commission in developing a government procurement strategy for Greece after the financial crisis. She has been awarded twice at the main European Operations Management conference for her research. In 2018, Katri received a major Academy of Finland grant for her project on “Alternative Causes to Agency Problems in Inter-Organizational Relationships – Hidden Expectations vs. Hidden Action”. Katri’s research focuses on purchasing and supply chain management, including e.g. public procurement, organizational purchasing behavior and sustainable supply chains.

Professor Kalle Kytölä, Department of Mathematics and Systems AnalysisMathematical physics: Laws of nature (en)tangle with logic
Kalle Kytölä (born 1979, Finland) studied physics and mathematics at the University of Helsinki and defended a PhD in mathematics (Doctor of Philosophy) at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in 2006.
After his PhD, Kytölä was a postdoctoral researcher in theoretical physics for two years at CEA Service de Physique Théorique in Saclay and at Université Paris Sud (Orsay). He subsequently moved to a two-year postdoctoral assistantship in mathematics at Université de Genève. In 2010, Kytölä received an academy research fellowship of the Academy of Finland, and returned to the University of Helsinki. He is a docent of mathematical physics at the University of Helsinki since 2014. Kytölä was appointed assistant professor of mathematics at Aalto University in 2014. Since 2015, he has been the principal investigator of an Academy of Finland research project at Aalto.
Kytölä's research focuses on two-dimensional, conformally invariant quantum field theories and related random geometry. He combines diverse mathematical methods of analysis, algebra, combinatorics and probability to address problems originating in physical models.

Professors Juuso Liesiö, Department of Information and Service ManagementPrescriptive analytics for better decision making
Juuso Liesiö (born 1980, Finland) obtained his Doctor of Science (Tech.) degree in Systems and Operations Research from Helsinki University of Technology in 2008. He has held a Research Scholar position at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria as well as Academy of Finland Postdoctoral Researcher and University Lecturer positions in the Aalto University School of Science. In 2015, he received an Assistant Professor position in the Aalto University School of Business. He is currently also a Visiting Fellow of the Loughborough University School of Business and Economics.
Liesiö’s research interests lie in decision analysis and prescriptive analytics with a focus on modelling incomplete preference information and uncertainties in decision support. In these areas, he has developed novel theory, methods, algorithms and computer software. This research has been published in some of the leading journals in the field of management science and operations research. He has collaborated with several companies and governmental organizations in applying his research results to practice.
Juuso Liesiö, D.Sc. (Tech.) has been appointed Professor of Quantitative Methods of Economics and Management Science at the Aalto University School of Business on 28 June 2018.
Professor Anne Lähteenmäki, Department of Electronics and NanoengineeringRadio eyes watch the skies: Radio astronomy as a tool for understanding the Universe
Anne Lähteenmäki (born 1968, Finland) received her D.Sc. (Tech.) degree in space technology from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland, in 1999. Her master’s degree in astronomy is from University of Turku. Currently she is a professor at Aalto University Metsähovi Radio Observatory and Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering. Holding also university teachers’ pedagogical qualification, she heads the Space Science and Technology major at Aalto University. While working as a researcher and Academy Research Fellow (2005–2010) at Metsähovi Radio Observatory, she has been involved in the Planck satellite collaboration, leading scientific projects and part of the time being stationed in the United Kingdom (2001–2003). She has spent a year as a visiting researcher at Tartu Observatory, Estonia (2017–2018). In 2018 she received the Gruber Cosmology Prize as a Planck Scientist and member of the Planck team.
In her research, Lähteenmäki focuses on multifrequency studies of active galactic nuclei (AGN), both blazar-type bright objects and their lower-luminosity siblings narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, and has authored over 240 refereed publications in this field. Her particular interest lies in the impact of the relativistic jet, generated in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole in the centre of the galaxy, to the evolution of young AGN.
Anne Lähteenmäki, D.Sc. (Tech.), has been appointed Professor of Electric Engineering at the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering on 5 February 2018.
