Paying the tuition fee
Students who have a scholarship covering their tuition fee in full do not have to pay the tuition fee.

Discount on tuition fees for new bachelor’s students for early acceptance of an admission offer
If you are a new bachelor’s student, you will receive a 25% reduction on the tuition fee for your first academic year if you accept your admission offer as instructed and pay the tuition fee by a specific deadline. The exact deadline for the discounted tuition fee payment depends on your situation, please see the right information below:
- If you are offered a study place to your highest ranked (first) study option preference: you must accept the admission offer and pay the tuition fee within 21 days of the date the university’s acceptance letter was sent to you to receive the 25% reduction. The exact deadline for the discounted payment will be in your acceptance letter.
- If you are offered a study place to a lower (second or third) study option preference: you will receive a separate email in May once all the admission results to Aalto’s English-taught bachelor’s programmes are published. You must accept the admission offer and pay the tuition fee within 21 days of the date the email was sent to you to receive the 25% reduction. The exact deadline for the discounted payment will be in the separate email sent to you in May.
- If you are offered a study place from the waiting list: you must accept the admission offer and pay the tuition fee within 21 days of the date you were admitted off the waiting list to receive the 25% reduction. Please note that the deadline to accept the admission offer might be earlier than the deadline for the discounted tuition fee payment. The exact deadlines will be in your acceptance letter.
The payment of the discounted tuition fee must be received at Aalto University (payment status 'delivered' on Flywire) within the 21 day time limit, by the specific deadline. The offer may only be used in the academic year when the student was admitted and may not be transferred to any other time.
If you have initiated the discounted tuition fee payment on time and have been trying to pay it in advance well before the deadline, but have not been able to do so due to reasons beyond your control (force majeure), please send a message to tuitionfees@aalto.fi to explain your situation in more detail.

How do I pay the tuition fee?
Aalto University has partnered with Flywire for tuition fee payments.
Pay the tuition fee with Flywire
Paying through Flywire is secure and easy, and you can follow your payment real-time. Please find further instructions for paying the tuition fee through Flywire below.
The tuition fee has to be paid and received at Aalto University before you can enrol as attending. More information about annual enrolment here.
- For the first academic year: you can pay the tuition fee after accepting the admission offer bindingly. The tuition fee must be paid in one instalment, covering the whole academic year. It is not possible to pay the tuition fee in two or more instalments.
- After the first academic year: it is recommended that the tuition fee is paid in one instalment during the enrolment period, covering the whole academic year. It is also possible to pay the tuition fee in two instalments (autumn term and spring term), but please bear in mind that this requires enrolling as non-attending for the other term. Non-attendance might have an effect on e.g. your residence permit in Finland.
Paying with Flywire is secure and straightforward, and you can choose the currency and the payment method best suited for you.
To pay your tuition fee through Flywire, just follow these steps:
- Open Flywire's payment portal.
- Select the country from where your payment will come and carefully write down your tuition fee amount. You can check the right tuition fee amount above in the section 'How much is the tuition fee?'
- Select your preferred payment method. You can compare different methods and choose the one most suitable to you.
- Fill in the payer information to initiate the payment. You can create an account to keep track of your payment.
- Fill in the student information: full name, email address, student number (for continuing students) / Studyinfo learner ID (for new students), and degree programme. This information will be included in your payment details to correctly identify your payment.
- Make your payment by following the instructions provided.
If you face any problems or have further questions related to paying through Flywire, please reach out to Flywire's support team at support@flywire.com. They have a multilingual support team at your disposal 24/7, and are ready to assist you in making the payment as smoothly as possible. You can also check out this instruction video and find further instructions on Flywire's pages.
If you cannot pay using Flywire, please send a message to tuitionfees@aalto.fi.
NB! If you are paying by bank transfer from China or Vietnam, Flywire will ask you to attach an invoice from the university. You can attach your admission letter for this purpose, as it contains the required information about the tuition fee amount.
For first-year students, we recommend that the tuition fee is paid (payment status 'delivered' on Flywire) at the latest by 31 July.
For continuing students, we recommended that the tuition fee is paid (payment status 'delivered' on Flywire) at the latest on 15 August.
By paying the tuition fee at the latest by the recommended deadline, you will have enough time to enrol as attending for the upcoming academic year before the end of the enrolment period.
Flywire offers real-time payment tracking, so after you have made the payment, you can check the payment status by logging into your Flywire account. You can also choose to receive text and email alerts to stay up-to-date when your payment has been delivered.
You can also download the payment receipt of your paid tuition fee from the Flywire portal. You can do this when the status of your payment is 'delivered'.
After the tuition fee payment has been received at Aalto University, we will send you a confirmation email, usually within a week. The email will also contain instructions regarding the next steps for enrolment. More information about annual enrolment here.
In what cases will I be refunded a paid tuition fee?
There are certain cases in which you have the right to a full refund of the tuition fee (excluding any bank charges). Please find more information about the refund process below.
The tuition fee amount refunded corresponds to the tuition fee amount you have paid to Aalto. You have a right to a full refund (excluding any bank charges) of a tuition fee paid to Aalto if:
- you have been conditionally admitted but do not meet the conditions (including any given deadline for submission of documents) and your place is cancelled,
- you bindingly renounce your right to study during the enrolment period (during autumn term enrolment: 100% refund of the fee for the entire academic year; during spring term enrolment: 50% refund of the fee for the entire academic year i.e. this covers just the fee for the spring term),
- you enroll as non-attending due to reasons specified in the law (during first year of studies) or change your status from attending to non-attending (after first year of studies) during the enrolment period (during autumn term enrolment: 100% refund of the fee for the entire academic year; during spring term enrolment: 50% refund of the fee for the entire academic year i.e. this covers just the fee for the spring term),
- you receive a negative decision on your residence permit in Finland and therefore are unable to enter the country to start or continue your studies,
- your residence permit status or nationality changes from one which gave a liability for fees to one giving an exemption, and you present the permit or, in case of a change of nationality, your passport or identity card before the end of the enrolment period (during autumn term enrolment: 100% refund of the fee for the entire academic year; during spring term enrolment: 50% refund of the fee for the entire academic year i.e. this covers just the fee for the spring term),
- the university is unable to offer the degree programme you have been admitted to,
- you graduate in the autumn term but you have paid the tuition fee for the entire academic year (refund 50% of the fee for the entire academic year i.e. the fee for the spring term), or
- you are prevented from starting your studies by circumstances evidently beyond your control (force majeure).
Please note that changes in the fee status made in the middle of term do not result in the reimbursement of the tuition fee for that term. The revised status will be effective, as a rule, from the beginning of the following term.
For other issues related to financing your studies and stay in Finland, please see the moving to Finland and financial matters page.
To request a refund (where applicable), contact tuitionfees@aalto.fi. You will get the relevant form to be submitted and information on needed supporting documents.
Please note that you have to apply for the tuition fee refund by a certain deadline. To receive a tuition fee refund for a particular term, you must apply for it by the end of the term:
- You may apply by the end of autumn term for a refund of tuition fee for that term or for a refund of tuition fee for the whole academic year.
- You may apply by the end of spring term for a refund of only that term’s tuition fee.
If you have any further questions about tuition fee refunds, please send a message to tuitionfees@aalto.fi.
