Course description

The Finnish healthcare system faces change pressures from society, organizations operating in the field, and patients. Alongside the scarcity of financial resources, change drivers are digitalization, made possible by technological development, and citizens' activation to participate in their personal care. Managers need to understand the different kinds of challenges related to these pressures and respond to development needs in their own organizations.

The target group of the program are leaders, experts, and decision-makers in the healthcare sector. The program is for you as someone who wants to succeed in your position, advance in your career, and develop the Finnish healthcare system in a more effective direction. You may work in primary healthcare, special healthcare, or healthcare industry-related services, and come from a private organization, the public sector, or the third sector.

Aalto EE plans and develops the program in co-operation with the steering group set up by the Finnish Medical Society Duodecim.

The Healthcare Management Program (Johtaminen terveydenhuollossa) approaches leadership challenges across diverse disciplines through business, operations management, and health economics. The faculty comes from Aalto University, Nordic universities, and national, regional, and private organizations developing the Finnish healthcare sector.

We address the program topics over seven training modules. The program begins in September each year and continues until May of the following year. Studies begin with an analysis of change pressures in healthcare. The goal is to find ways to manage strategic challenges. The second module strengthens your expertise in strategic management practices and tools. To reach your strategic goals, you need financial indicators to help you acquire strategic objectives. In the third module, you will learn to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of operations and make investment decisions.

Midway through the program, you will confirm your ability to assess the effectiveness of healthcare methods and prioritization issues. The fifth module focuses on developing customer- and patient-oriented service entities in healthcare production, and on knowledge management. In the sixth module, you will get a comprehensive picture of the plans to renew publicly funded social and healthcare, and will assess the effects and conditions of the changes in more depth. In the final module, you will strengthen your skills as a communicator and leader in the midst of all these changes.

The modules include pre-assignments and post-assignments, which faculty members assess. You will receive 18 ECTS credits from the program, which you can transfer to the Aalto Executive MBA or the Aalto MBA programs. The studies will enable you to complete a Health E/MBA program tailored to the healthcare industry.

The program is held in Finnish.

Teaching takes place at Aalto EE's premises in Helsinki.
