The application period for Aalto University Summer School 2023 is now open. This year, the Summer School offers five new undergraduate-level courses, as well as three graduate courses, with topics ranging from game design and virtual reality to biomaterials and self-leadership. The scheduling of the undergraduate curriculum allows students to combine several courses according to their interests, while the graduate courses challenge students to deepen their knowledge through intensive project work.

The summer courses invite students and continuous learners from all over the world to work together in an international and multidisciplinary setting for two weeks. All of the courses are taught by Aalto faculty on Aalto University’s green seaside campus in Otaniemi, Espoo.

‘Aalto University’s strengths, specialities and cross-cutting approaches are at the heart of planning the summer courses. Our courses combine solutions for sustainability, radical creativity and entrepreneurial mindset in a way that is unique to Aalto University. The Summer School is a great opportunity for visiting students to experience the multidisciplinary and challenge-based Aalto way of learning,’ says Laura Kitinoja, Program Director of the Summer School.

More than an academic experience

Summer school is not only an academic learning experience but also a way to meet people across the world and get to know a new country and culture. Students at Aalto University Summer School enjoy Finnish summer activities and visit interesting sites in the Helsinki region with their coursemates. Support from friendly programme staff is available to ensure a fun and smooth experience at Aalto University.

‘The best part of the course was meeting new people from different places and backgrounds and getting inspired by their work and our conversations. It was so interesting to talk to all the students, professors and CHEMARTS staff and to see their projects. These discussions were a great source of inspiration and helped me get many new ideas for future projects.

After the lectures or lab work, we often went to the Helsinki centre with the metro and visited museums, for example, the national museum of Finland, or did some sightseeing. The highlights were a sauna visit in Helsinki and a day trip to Tallinn in Estonia on the weekend.’

Multidisciplinary course offering for 2023

The bachelor’s level course offering for summer 2023 includes courses on Game Design, Introduction to Virtual Reality, Self-Leadership, Leading Transformation and Circular Economy. By combining the different courses, students can build a selection to support their individual learning goals or experience new and exciting topics for the first time.

The graduate courses include Aalto University Summer School favourites Digital Business and Nordic Biomaterials, in addition to a brand new course on Radical Creativity. Each of the master’s level courses includes two intensive weeks of project work supported by lectures and workshops, not to mention the lively discussions among the diverse group of participants.
