Example of recommended timeline
Month (2nd year) | Step |
August | Read the general thesis instructions and guidelines (see top of page) and check the advertised thesis topics of the Programme. |
September-October |
Contact supervisor to apply for advertised topic or to suggest your own topic. November Supervisors choose and announce students for each topic. If more than one student is interested in the same topic, supervisors will make their decision based on the students' study success (= grades in the relevant courses). |
December | You and supervisor together with the thesis advisor will have a kick-off meeting. |
December-January | Apply for the topic officially. To apply for the MSc thesis topic, see the general thesis instructions and guidelines. Note the deadlines. |
January-May | Writing the thesis |
May-June | Finalizing and presentation of the thesis, applying for approval |
In case you are not able to follow the suggested process, you must hand over a time plan for an individual thesis process and motivate the deviation for the common plan. You need to present your plan for the Programme Director by the end of the year during the second year of master studies.
Aalto University Language Centre arranges a course titled “LC-1322 Thesis Writing for Engineers (MSc), 3 credits”. This course is highly recommended. Participation in this course is useful when starting to write your Master’s thesis.
