VLBI equipment is used to sample and store the received radio signal digitally. This sampling is tightly locked to the pace of an H maser atomic clock at every participating observatory. The resulting multi-gigabit streams of samples are thus ultra stable and can be compared at a correlator to extract the common signal coming from the target of observation.
