SGT invites Master's and doctoral-level students from all Aalto schools to learn to work in groups with highly diverse cultures and disciplines throughout the entire program. If you are interested in a minor focused on global sustainability and humanitarian development, please see World in Transition (WiT) Minor.

State of the World and Development (2 ECTS)

WAT-E3020

This lecture series gives an introduction to the state of the world and development. It highlights the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable development and explores the dilemma of development from different perspectives. This series of 10 guest lectures is open for all during Period I (Autumn).

Sustainable Built Environment (5 ECTS)

WAT-E2060

This course covers fundamentals of basic infrastructures focusing on sustainable technologies, infrastructures and policies aiming for environmentally, culturally and economically more sustainable built environments globally. The key content covers water, energy, waste management, housing, land use, climate change, vulnerability and resilient communities. This course prepares students for the SGT studio and fieldwork. Set of 12 guest lectures & participatory workshops, Period II (Autumn).

Sustainable Global Technologies Studio (10 ECTS)

WAT-E2070

The highlight of the SGT courses. SGT Studio is a co-learning studio course for Master’s and Doctoral students at the Aalto University. During the course students form multidisciplinary teams to carry out projects linked to global development challenges. Assignments are implemented with partners from academia, industries, governmental and civil society organizations and communities in developing and transition countries. Each project team will be mentored by Aalto researchers and practicing professionals. Project-based team work, Periods III-V (Spring).
