Sara Troberg

‘I’m currently living in New York, but I’m from Helsinki originally. I work for Skanska USA on the expansion project of the iconic Penn Station – America’s busiest train station – located in the heart of Manhattan. Before that, I worked in Finland as a development engineer at Skanska’s BIM department, where my duties involved building information modelling, mobile applications for jobsites as well as virtual and augmented reality technologies.

My favourite aspect of construction is that it’s a continuous process of problem solving, with no ready answers for how to proceed. Every construction project is different, and there’s no such thing as a normal day – work is anything but boring! Jobsites have a hectic atmosphere, many things going on at once and the results of the work are made concrete as the building is completed. Development, for its part, is an opportunity to take the field of construction forward and it provides a front row seat for seeing the future of the industry.

The construction industry is filled with possibilities – you can work at a design department, a material supplier, a contractor or a developer and projects range from bridges and power stations to airports and apartments. New construction and the construction renovation business are two entirely different worlds – and there’s always work to be done in both of them!’
