IUTAM SYMPOSIUM ON PHYSICS AND MECHANICS OF SEA ICE - JUNE 3-7, 2019

Aims and Scope

The objective of the IUTAM Symposium on Physics and Mechanics of Sea Ice is to bring together researchers who have made significant contributions in the study of sea ice to discuss the recent achievements and ideas for further work. The symposium is also open to those from other disciplines who might accelerate progress or even provide new pathways. In order to facilitate in-depth discussions, the symposium focuses on the following five topics:

1. Fracture of ice
2. Thermodynamics of sea ice ridges
3. Global and local ice loads on ships and marine structures
4. Computational ice engineering and ice mechanics
5. Physical and engineering problems related to ice and waves

This symposium will be the fourth IUTAM Symposium on sea ice. The earlier ones were in Copenhagen, Denmark (1979); in St. John's, Canada (1989), and in Fairbanks, USA (2000).

Venue

The symposium will be held in Dipoli (www.aalto.fi/en/locations/dipoli), the main building of Aalto University. Aalto University campus located is in Espoo, about 10km from the center of Helsinki, Finland. Aalto University can be easily reached from the Helsinki airport and – by using the new metro line – from downtown Helsinki. The campus area is rapidly growing and is famous for the architecture and for the concentration of high technology.

Registration

Registration for the symposium is now open. Please register by using our online registration system at https://confedent.eventsair.com/iutam-2019/registration. Deadline for the registration is April 15, 2019. The registration fee of 400€ includes a get-together event in a nearby natural park, lunches and coffees for five days, and the conference dinner. For registration, an administration fee of 50€ will be applied to all cancellations made by April 30, 2019. No refunds will be made for cancellations made after April 30, 2019 and there will be no refund for no-shows. All cancellations must be made in writing to [email protected]. 

Accommodation

A number of rooms have been reserved at Radisson Blu Hotel at Aalto campus (www.radissonblu.com/en/hotel-espoo). The price of a single room is 123 €/night, and the price of a double room is 153 €/night. To book a room, please contact the hotel through [email protected]. Call for Papers

Authors wishing to contribute to the Symposium are invited to submit a one-page abstract, clearly stating the objectives, results and conclusions of the work to be discussed in the presentation. Deadline for the abstract submission in January 31, 2019. Please send your abstract by email to [email protected]

As the goal of IUTAM symposia is to achieve an effective communication between the participants, there will be no parallel sessions, and the number of both active participants and presentations is limited. The number of presentations in this symposium is limited to 25. The participants will be selected by the Scientific Committee on the basis of scientific merits only.

The papers selected will be published in the symposium proceedings in IUTAM Bookseries by Springer.

The symposium schedule is shown below. Minor changes are possible and the schedule below will be continuously updated.

One hour has been reserved for each talk: 40 min for presentations and 20 min for discussions. We plan to video record all the talks and store them on the symposium website at Aalto server. If you prefer that your talk is not recorded or stored, please let us know.

Social Program

A Get-Together event is arranged on Monday evening. We will visit Haltia, a nature center in a natural park in northern Espoo. There will be bus transportation from the campus and back. At Haltia some food and drinks will be served and you will have the possibility to look at the exhibition and also take a stroll in the forest if the weather is good. (www.haltia.com/en/)
