Implementation of general language guidelines
Aalto University has revised it general language guidelines as well as its guidelines on the languages of degrees and instruction. The updated guidelines encourage linguistic diversity, multilingualism and the parallel use of languages. The updates have come into effect in January 2024.
Implementation follows the principles of living strategy: implementation of the guidelines is done gradually, and the implementation of the guidelines and the implementation plan are reviewed regularly and modified if necessary.
Implementation of language guidelines
Below is a plan for implementing the general language guidelines within different sub-areas. The implementation plan for teaching and examination language guidelines is under preparation.
Developing multilingual and inclusive operational and communication practices
Implementation: Piloting of practices developed within the language boost project during 2024, and integration to basic activities. Exploring the potential of emerging technologies for multilingual communication.
Responsibility: Unit managers and supervisors, Learning Services, HR Services, IT Services, Communications Services
Including information about the Finnish language environment and language learning opportunities to recruitment and onboarding materials for students and employees
Implementation: Compiling material to make it easily accessible. Close cooperation with the City of Espoo, HEI Life and the Talent Boost programme in promoting integration into Finnish society.
Responsibility: Learning Services, HR Services
Strengthening the multilingualism of the organisation and the language skills of the employees
Implementation: strengthening the EDI perspective in personnel planning and recruitment processes. Regular evaluation of the realisation of linguistic rights Development of structures and practices related to language learning (e.g. working hours spent on learning, task-specific language skills recommendations, supporting multilingualism in everyday communication) and the provision of education in Finnish, Swedish and English.
Responsibility: HR Services, unit managers and supervisors with HR support
Development of scientific terminology and concepts in national cooperation
Implementation: Participation in national development work through the Terminology Bank for Science and the Research Support and Administration (TUHA) network.
Responsibility: Schools, Research Support Services
Academic employees are supported in scientific writing and science communication
Implementation: Development of multilingual communication skills as part of doctoral education. Support for multilingual research writing and science communication.

Developing multilingual documentation, meeting and service practices
Utilisation of technology in the development of materials and communication practices.
Responsibility: Service managers and managers their own content, IT Services (technological development and support)
Aalto University's translators maintain Aalto's internal dictionary and vocabulary of commonly used abbreviations
Implementation: Updating Aalto's internal dictionary and vocabulary
Responsibility: Translator team in collaboration with the content owners.
The most important public content and content aimed at students are published in Finnish, Swedish and English. Internal content for personnel is mainly in Finnish and English
Implementation: Establishing multilingual practices as part of daily activities. Regular evaluation of the experience of using communication channels.
