Course Exam and Retake Exam Conducted as Supervised Hall Exams
The course exam and retake exam will be conducted as supervised hall exams, with students completing the exam electronically on their own computers in the exam hall. The arrangements for the exam are managed by Aalto University Open University Learning Services.
Participation in the exam requires advance preparation on your part as outlined below.
Advance Preparations:
- You can take the exam on a PC (Windows) or a Mac (macOS).
- The exam can only be taken using the Safe Exam Browser program, which you must have downloaded to your computer in advance. This program "locks" the exam space so that during the exam, the computer cannot access anywhere other than the exam area.
Well in Advance of the Exam:
- Download and install the Safe Exam Browser program (SEB) on your computer. It is available for free from the website: https://www.safeexambrowser.org/download_en.html. Ensure that you have the latest version of the program on your computer.
- Take a technical test exam available in the course area. The technical test exam does not contain content questions; its purpose is solely to ensure that the installation of the SEB program on your computer is successful, and that MyCourses SEB exams work on your computer as they should.
It is not possible to set up SEB installation and testing during the actual exam session, so ensure well in advance that your computer functions in the exam as it should.
Preparations Close to the Exam:
- Charge your computer battery fully and bring it to the exam. The duration of the exam is xxxx (x) hours. Note that there are very few power outlets in the exam halls, and a seat with an outlet cannot be guaranteed.
- Bring a laptop, a photo ID, and a charged mobile phone with you to handle Aalto's multi-stage login (possibly also the laptop's power cord).
- Ensure that you remember your username and password. They are required for the exam and passwords saved on the computer are not accessible at that time.
- Also, bring a pen in case you need to switch to a paper exam due to technical issues.
Conduct of the Exam:
• The identity of all students will be verified before entering the exam room, so please arrive in front of the exam room at least 15 minutes before the exam starts.
• The exam will use Aalto's wireless network "aalto" or "aalto open". This requires multifactor authentication, so you must bring the mobile phone that you typically use for Aalto’s multifactor authentication. After logging in, leave the phone on the table, turned off and face down. If you need to log in again during the exam for any reason, call the invigilator by raising your hand.
• Open the exam from the MyCourses course area (it is found in the last section of the course area), then the Safe Exam Browser will prompt you to log in to the MyCourses system again, and then you can access the exam directly. Remember your username and password, as the Safe Exam Browser cannot access passwords that may be saved on your computer.
• Starting the exam also requires the password distributed during the exam session. The exam can only be taken with the password during the exam's open hours and only once.
• When you are finished, submit your exam in the MyCourses system and go to the exam supervisor with your belongings. Do not close the exam view or your computer. The exam supervisor will check your ID and ensure that your exam is in the "submitted" state on your computer. After that, you can close the exam view on your computer (from the power button-like icon in the lower right corner).
• In case of any issues, and your computer locks, go to the exam supervisor; they will provide you with the password needed to exit the SEB state, but this is not normally required.
• In case of problems, you can also take or continue the exam on paper. In this case, ask the exam supervisor for a paper exam. MyCourses automatically saves your answers up to that point whenever you move to a new page in the exam. If you suspect your battery might run out or similar, you can keep a record on scrap paper of which questions you have already answered in the electronic system.
