Aalto University offers new scholarships and study rights without fees to Ukraine’s university students
Who can apply
Free non-degree study-rights
The free-of-charge non-degree study-right may be granted to students who have a valid right to study towards a degree at a Ukrainian university, and who have either Ukrainian citizenship or an asylum from Ukraine, and whose studies have been interrupted by the war.
More detailed information on the criteria and application-process is given below.
Scholarships for free non-degree study-rights
Ukrainian non-degree students at Aalto can also apply for scholarships of 800 euros a month for the spring term 2025.
Scholarships are offered for eligible applicants as long as there are available funds, on a first-come-first-served basis.
To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, you need either:
- a valid, free non-degree study right for the spring term 2025 at Aalto, with study units selected for a minimum of 10 credits, or
- to have applied and be eligible for the free non-degree study right for the spring term 2025, with study units selected for a minimum of 10 credits.
Please note, this scholarship can be received a maximum of 4 terms (2 academic years). If you have already received the scholarship for the maximum 4 terms, you are not eligible to apply or receive further scholarships for free non-degree studies from Aalto University and should see the website for Kela benefits for those who have fled the war in Ukraine.

How to apply
Application period for free non-degree study rights
Until 13 April 2025.
Please apply as early as possible before the study units start. We recommend you submit a complete application at least 3 weeks before the intended start of studies.
Application period for scholarships
14 October - 29 November 2024 (for spring term 2025 scholarships).
Scholarships for the spring term 2025 can only be applied during the application period given above.
Decisions on scholarships are given directly to applicants in December 2024.
Requested documents for non-degree study right applications
- An account by the applicant or by the home university of the applicant’s major, academic performance, content of studies, date the studies began, and the target degree.
- Possible degree certificate, transcript of studies or the equivalent (e.g. a photo or a screenshot).
- A preliminary Aalto study plan: please draft a study plan by choosing suitable study units from the school-specific study-listings below.
- A copy, a photo or a screenshot of the applicant’s passport.
Ukrainian non-degree students can apply to offered study units as long as they have the prerequisite knowledge and skills to attend the unit.
Most of the study units offered in English are on master's level. Bachelor’s degree students on the final stages of their degree can take master level study units, provided that they have the prerequisite knowledge and skills for the units.
In some cases, there may be restrictions on participation (e.g. study unit availability restricted only for students of certain major or priority given to the degree students of the school), but applicant will be informed of these once their application and study plan has been checked.

Admission criteria and process
Study-rights
The free non-degree study-right is granted on the basis of:
- the application,
- the student’s preliminary study plan,
- the content of the previous studies,
- the amount of studies previously completed,
- English language skills,
- and/or a possible interview
The student needs a sufficient level of English for their studies at Aalto.
The study rights are offered for applicants who meet the selection criteria on a first-come-first-served basis as long as there are places left on the study units.
Applicants are notified of their admission decision as soon as possible after submitting a complete application, normally within 3 weeks, but please note that at the end of the term the decision may take longer due to universty staff holidays.
Important note: offers for free non-degree study-rights are valid only 3 weeks from the date of the notification email and will be cancelled if not accepted within that time.
Scholarships
Scholarships for free non-degree study-rights are offered for eligible applicants as long as there are available funds, on a first-come-first-served basis, for a maximum of 4 terms (2 academic years) per student.
To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, you need either:
- a valid, free non-degree study right for the spring term 2025 at Aalto, with study units selected for a minimum of 10 credits,
- or to have applied and be eligible for the free non-degree study right for the spring term 2025, with study units selected for a minimum of 10 credits.
Scholarships can be granted only to students who are living in Finland and studying at Aalto University.
Important note: offers for scholarships are valid only 3 weeks from the date of the notification email and will be cancelled if not accepted within that time.
Start of studies
The study right begins after the applicant’s student status has been approved. The study right will end on the 31st of July 2025 at the latest.
Start and duration of Scholarships
The scholarships are mainly offered from the beginning of January to the end of July 2025, subject to studying at Aalto within that period.
Please note that the first payments of scholarships are likely to be made towards the end of January 2025, subject to the enrolment for at least one study unit for the spring term 2025.
What can be studied
The non-degree study right entitles the student to complete individual study units (or modules, e.g. minors), but not a degree.
Students may apply to Aalto University for bachelor’s or master’s degree studies as part of the normal admissions procedure, further information of this available from Apply to Aalto.
