The theme month promotes sustainable mobility

In May, Otaniemi offers a variety of events and activities to remind people of sustainable choices in mobility.

In Otaniemi, a theme month will be held in May to encourage sustainable mobility choices and increased everyday activity. For a month, the campus will serve as an environment for experiments and encounters, with both Aalto University and the City of Espoo organising the programme.

The theme month encourages people to reflect on how their daily choices of transport mode affect the environment and their own wellbeing. At the same time, it highlights ways to make sustainable mobility attractive and a natural part of everyday life.

During May there will be low-threshold activities and happenings on campus. Free bicycle maintenance will be offered at Korkeakouluaukio, and guidance will be provided for city bike users. The programme also includes lighter community events, such as a pub quiz and other relaxed get-togethers.

The events organised by the City of Espoo are open and free of charge to everyone, whereas some Aalto community events are intended only for students and staff. Espoo’s events have been compiled on the Otaniemi on a sustainable path website. A compilation of the programme aimed at the Aalto community will be published around mid-April and will list all events organised by Aalto. There is no need to register separately for the programmes.

There are many ways to take part. You can come to the events in person and you can also organise, for example, a walking or cycling campaign within your own study or work community.

City bikes have arrived on campus to make it easier to get around, including for those who do not have their own bike. Those arriving by public transport are encouraged to increase their steps, for example by getting off one stop earlier – even a short walk can brighten your day.

Students’ opportunities for language learning to expand from autumn 2026

Founded in 2025, KiePe – Network for Language Centre Pedagogy, Teaching and Research – will broaden the range of language courses available to students at universities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The KiePe network, composed of the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, the University of the Arts Helsinki, and Hanken School of Economics, will offer their students the chance to take elective language courses at any of the network universities in the future.
Students will be able register for courses via the cross-institutional studies service (RIPA) from autumn 2026. By autumn 2028, the study paths of the network universities will be harmonised to some extent, which will make cross-institutional studies even easier.
Students wishing to take language courses outside their home university can register for language courses offered by the network universities through the cross-institutional studies service and view the course offerings on the universities’ websites. More detailed information about the course offering and registration practices will be provided in August 2026.
