Outcome-based business models are an opportunity for growth at ABB
Student team explored the ins and outs of outcome-based models
One of the most long-term partners for Aalto University (and especially for electrical engineering) is ABB and its predecessors. ABB is an official strategic partner of Aalto University. Cooperation with the School of Business has been done sporadically over the years, and now the goal is to deepen the cooperation and do it systematically. ABB became the School of Business' Premium Partner from the beginning of 2024.
While elsewhere in Aalto University, in cooperation with ABB, research and student connections are emphasized, the plan is to especially deepen teaching cooperation with the School of Business. Recruiting students is also one of the goals, and teaching collaboration is a great way to build an employer image in a sustainable way. Through various projects (e.g. customized company projects and project courses), ABB also receives concrete help for its development work, as we saw in the spring of 2024, when our students brought ABB more understanding of the utilization of a result-based business model at ABB.
ABB is the technology leader in electrification and automation, creating the conditions for a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. The company's solutions combine design expertise and software, and they optimize the manufacturing, movement, use and operation of products. More than 105,000 professionals of ABB, which has already operated successfully for more than 140 years, are committed to developing innovations that accelerate industrial change. At the center of ABB's operations are various solutions for a more sustainable future with various energy-saving solutions, and new ones are constantly being sought. ABB has a lot of expertise in the field of business, which it is also happy to share with our students. ABB people have been participating in our various courses for a long time and the cooperation has been fruitful. Teemu Malmi, Professor of Accounting and Head of the Department, talks about the importance of educational cooperation and his experiences with ABB: "Solving practical problems offers students the opportunity to apply what they have learned in practice. For the organization it offers, in addition to actual problem solving, the opportunity to attract new talent to the organization, and at the same time to assess the students' suitability for the tasks on offer. In accounting the Capstone courses, where student groups work on challenges/questions assigned to them by the company, receive the best evaluations from students of all courses. Based on the students' own assessments, the cases brought by the companies help learning significantly. ABB's representatives have held visiting lectures and collaborated on the master's level Capstone course in accounting, and both ABB's units and students have both been satisfied with the collaboration." Discussions about a school-wide partnership started precisely because of this cooperation.
Miikka Aho (Head of SSU Drives at ABB), who is coordinating our collaboration there says: "At ABB, we innovate in a changing world to solve today's and tomorrow's challenges in electrification and automation. We take responsibility for learning, for developing a feedback-driven culture and for growth. A good example of this is the Capstone courses that have brought together Aalto students and ABB experts. Together we have learned new perspectives and created concrete solutions and innovations. Thanks to this partnership, School of Business students get to know us better, we do more interesting collaborative projects and build the path from student to ABB employee. Thanks to Teemu and ABB management for making this new partnership possible."
ABB is also known to be a very active participant in our career events, and they have also received praise for this from students. Talent Expo visitors have named ABB 2023 as the fair's most interesting exhibitor. And no wonder, because the representatives are always approachable and genuinely want to meet our talented students.
In Otaniemi, ABB will continue to be visible in the overalls of electrical guild members, but now also more widely for students in the Undergraduate Centre through its own sponsored lecture hall.
