We also collected doctoral hats maker's contact information and prices and the most common questions related to the doctoral hats.
The regalia of a Doctor of Science in Technology include the doctoral hat. In addition, doctors can choose to wear embroidered velvet collar on the tailcoat or a brooch on the dress.
Doctoral hat |
The emblem on the doctoral hat of a Doctor of Science in Technology is a lyre made of a flame, symbolising work and wisdom ‘labor et scientia’, placed inside a steel ring surrounded by a golden laurel wreath. A special feature of the hat worn by Doctors of Science in Technology is the curled brim. The doctoral hats with names of the promovendi (doctors to be conferred in the conferment ceremony) shall be delivered to the Ceremonial Conferment Committee beforehand. Details of the delivery will be given in May. Also, guests are encouraged to wear their doctoral hats of their alma mater during the daytime ceremony. In case the alma mater does not include a doctoral hat as university regalia, the hat is not required. Please note the list of hat makers at the end of this page. |
Velvet collar with tailcoat | The velvet collar worn by Doctors of Science in Technology is embroidered in black silk on each lapel of the tailcoat. Since the collar is permanently attached to the tailcoat, a hired or borrowed tailcoat cannot be used. |
Brooch with formal dress |
The doctor’s regalia include a black velvet 6-by-8 centimeter oval brooch, which has the same symbol as the hat lyre, embroidered in black silk. The brooch is attached on the left side of the formal dress, below the collarbone (not too low). If the doctor is wearing other honorary decorations, the brooch should be worn on the left, in the place of the Star of the Order of the White Rose of Finland, below other official decorations. The brooch is worn in academic events. |
Frequently asked questions about doctoral hats
Not necessarily. You can ask your friends or colleagues if they can lend their hat to you. As an alternative, you can ask your supervising professor if they know someone who could lend a hat. But remember, the hat should carry the lyre of technology.
In case the hat is too large for you, we suggest you to add a band inside it to fit your head size. Remember, a borrowed hat doesn’t need to be perfect, but you need to make sure it doesn’t fall on your eyes or it doesn’t fall when you bow after receiving the doctoral hat in the act of conferment.
Yes. If you graduated from Aalto University, you can borrow a hat from your colleagues. If you didn’t graduate from Aalto University, you can wear the insignia of your alma mater, e.g. gown.
In case your alma mater doesn’t have any specific insignia, you can still participate both to the conferment procession and to the evening banquet and ball, but you should follow the other dress code guidelines.
During the Act of Conferment:
- the guests participating in the procession must carry their doctoral hat in left hand.
- the doctoral hats won't be worn during the whole act. The conferrer will give instructions on when taking off and putting back on the hats.
- During the national anthem (Maamme), all guests must take off their hats regardless their gender.
Guest are welcome to wear their doctoral hats. However, the doctoral hats must be left at the cloak room during the banquet.
The doctoral hats can be worn again after the banquet.
Honorary decorations
All guests who have been awarded an honorary decoration by the Finnish President (or their own head of state) are invited to wear the decorations both during the daytime ceremony and the ceremonial evening event. Instructions to wear honorary decorations: www.ritarikunnat.fi
