Closing Loops

The Closing Loops project involves constructing a storage building in Helsinki's Mustikkamaa using reused materials.
Wooden building

The project originated from a student competition organized by the Department of Architecture at Aalto University and the City of Helsinki. The competition was won by Johanna Saarela and Markus Saarela with their proposal "Lippa." The research team, led by Professor Antti Lehto and architect Havu Järvelä, serves as the main architectural designers for the project. During design, material will be collected for research, with the resulting articles focusing particularly on the design process for material reuse, material selection and approval, and the changes caused by communication and decision-making among the involved parties. The completed building will provide accurate and realistic insights into circular construction practices, which have been rare.
