peripheries in parallax: BRAVE NEW PERIPHERIES, Opening Conference and Art Event

BRAVE NEW PERIPHERIES is a two-part conference mapping out the implications and alliances of ‘peripheries’ and ‘peripheral approaches’ through art, artistic research and related fields in society. Alongside the conference, a durational, curated art event entitled MATTER takes place at the Aalto ARTS University Campus.

"peripheries in parallax: BRAVE NEW PERIPHERIES examines peripheries as concrete or immaterial fields, approaches, phenomenon, practices or epistemologies that are in different ways framed as ‘marginal’ in relation to presupposed ‘central’/’centralized’ systems and mediated global assumptions[,,]"

The first of two conferences will take place online on 22 January 2021, 10.00-16.00, and will include a keynote dialogue from Paola Balla and Rebecca Hilton titled My Edge Your Centre: reflections on place and belonging, sensing and sense making. For the full programme and to register for the conference, click here.

The conference will conclude with the MATTER launch event (online and on campus*) from 15.00-16.00. MATTER features works by artists Niran Baibulat, Miina Hujala, Vincent Roumagnac and Denise Ziegler, and is curated by Pia Euro, Lecturer, ViCCA, Department of Art, Aalto University, Espoo and Tanja Kiiveri, Lecturer, Time and Space Art, Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts, Helsinki.

The second conference is on 9 April 2021 for which there is an open call for presentations and essays (call for proposals). There is also an open call for artworks to be exhibited in two upcoming art events (call for artworks).

"The conferences experiment with combinations of presenting artistic research in the borderline of the actual and the virtual. We hope that the participants bring topics related to the peripheral phenomenon into the discussion in a way that leaves room for speculation in the development of the argument, are sketchy or includes improvisation."
