Communication networks generate enormous amounts of data, and telecommunication operators and other big players in the industry are in great demand of experts in both telecommunications and data science. The CODAS summer school aimed to develop skills in the fields of signals and systems, electronics, data science, networks, and the Internet of Things, forstudents in their 3rd-year bachelor's or master's degree.
The two-week course included remote studying and one week at the Aalto University campus for lectures, workshops and project work. The students were tasked with two engineering projects in the field of Data Science, where they collaborated in multidisciplinary teams. The groups worked on their projects in Aalto, and at their home universities during the second week, where they collaborated online with the support of the teaching team in Aalto, Prof. Stephan Sigg and teaching assistant Sahar Golipoor.
During their week in Aalto, students were also given training in professional skills development, such as public speaking, leadership, and project management.
Dr. Stephan Sigg, associate professor in Mobile and Pervasive Computing domains, initiated the idea for the course. “We had been running the CoDaS international MSc programme for a few years, and already from the beginning we had been discussing how nice it would be to have a summer school. Now, when applying for the Erasmus Mundus programme, we wanted to include it into the proposal for the Master’s degree” says Stephan.
The course professor continued, “I found it very positive that the students were quite focused on the summer school because they came here particularly for this event. The atmosphere was enthusiastic and productive due to students coming together at a different place and with a specific target/focus.”
In addition to Professor Sigg’s lectures, the course included the following visiting lectures: Communications Engineering by Prof. David Rincon from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya; Edge computing, service placement in the edge, and energy-efficiency aspects of communication networks by Prof. Gopika Premsankar, who will start as a professor in Aalto in January; IoT, embedded systems and microcontrollers by Dr. Ada Brzoza from Akademii Górniczo-Hutniczej in Krakow; Data Science by Prof. Cláudia Antunes from Universidade de Lisboa; Network Biology by Prof. Tim Kacprowski from Technische Universität Braunschweig; and Joint communication and Sensing, by Dr. Dariush Salami from Nokia Bell-Labs.
From Aalto, Program Director Laura Kitinoja taught a lecture on Project management and Arts Lecturer Natalia Villaman lead a training on public speaking and professional networking.
The course brought together students from Politecnico di Torino, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, TUGraz University of Technology, and Aalto University, who presented the results of their projects online during the final week of the course.
