Aalto Alumni Strategy Circle After Work: Empowering vs. controlling leadership in business and the military

Welcome to the ninth Aalto alumni strategy circle after-work event on the topic of Empowering vs. controlling leadership in business and the military. Join us if you are interested in practices and insights about how and when to empower people in different types of organizations, reflecting on and comparing practices in business and practices in the military. A lot has been discussed about empowering people in business, but it is less well known that the military also often systematically empowers people at lower ranks. Maybe there are lessons to be learned from military leadership practices for business?

Again we have a stellar panel, with experts who have experience from both business and the military: Frank Martela, professor of Organization Design at Aalto University, Tiina Laisi-Puheloinen, CEO of FiBAN, experienced entrepreneur and business leader, and active reserve officer in the Finnish Defence Forces, and Anne Lamminen, Head Instructor, Leadership in the Department of Leadership and Military Pedagogy of the Finnish National Defence University.

Frank Martela is a researcher, writer, speaker and philosopher who works as an Assistant Professor of Organization Design at Aalto University. He is an expert on well-being and work engagement as well as less hierarchical organizations. He has written several books that have been translated into more than 20 languages.

Tiina Laisi-Puheloinen is a business leader and an active reservist in the in the Finnish Defence Forces. Currently the CEO of FiBAN, she has wide experience from leading startups, running divisions of large companies, and serving in company boards. She holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Helsinki.

Anne Lamminen is a major in the Finnish Defence Forces and Head Instructor, Leadership in the Department of Leadership and Military Pedagogy of the Finnish National Defence University. She holds a General Staff Officer’s Degree from the National Defence University and an MBA from Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences. 

This is a great opportunity to hear about the latest insights and learn about best practices as well as share experiences with your colleagues. The event is free of charge and open for all Aalto alumni who are interested in the topic of strategy.
