Research Ethics and Legal Questions in Web-Based Research, Nov 7, 2024
Description
Using online content for research purposes is becoming more frequent. User-generated content on discussion platforms and social media, for instance, yields a lot of potential for both qualitative and quantitative research. However, the use of user-generated online content for research purposes raises a lot of ethical and legal questions. These include:
- What is the online service users’ perception about the publicity of their content?
- How to handle GDPR matters when collecting data regarded as personal data from online platforms?
- Is it necessary to ask informed consent from online service users?
- What does the researcher need to consider regarding terms of use of the platform where the data is collected?
- What does one need to understand regarding copyrights when collecting data from online platforms?
- How to protect the anonymity and privacy of online service users?
- How to consider that the users might misrepresent their identity and age, for instance?
