Diving into different cultures

Jonas embarked on a journey from Austria to the Aalto Mikkeli Campus, seeking intercultural and academic enrichment. His educational experiences in Austria, the Philippines, and the United States strengthened his will to pursue studies in international business.

“My fascination with travel has always been intertwined with a deep-seated desire to immerse myself in diverse cultures. This passion stems not only from personal curiosity but also from a firm belief in the profound advantages of international experience in today's interconnected world. As borders blur and global markets expand, the ability to navigate different cultures and economies becomes an invaluable asset,” says Jonas Hering.

Motivation and racing background

Since age 12, Jonas pursued his lifelong dream of participating in an IronMan race, motivated by a desire to push boundaries. With a background in triathlons and subsequent progression to the challenging IronMan distance, he embraced the physical and mental rigors of endurance racing.

Making the most of Mikkeli’s scenic beauty

The picturesque landscapes of Mikkeli, including forests, lakes, and rolling hills, provided an ideal backdrop for Jonas' running and cycling training. Additionally, the local swimming pool and beautiful lakes facilitated open-water swim practice, enhancing his IronMan training experience.

Balancing athletic training and academics

Managing the demands of IronMan training and academic responsibilities required meticulous planning, structured routines, and prioritization of time. Recognizing the importance of well-being, including proper rest, nutrition, and relaxation, Jonas maintained a flexible schedule at Aalto Mikkeli to support his athletic pursuits.

“The half-day class schedule provides ample time in the afternoons and evenings for workouts and assignments,” says Hering.

Overcoming challenges and building a supportive community

Jonas overcame challenges through experimentation, adaptability, and perseverance, supported by a community of running and cycling companions in Mikkeli. The positive influence of Finnish sportsmanship further bolstered his motivation and resilience in preparing for the IronMan race.

“The good sportsmanship embedded in Finnish culture has been a positive influence, making training here enjoyable and motivating. Additionally, a colleague from the Mikkeli campus has committed to supporting me on Ironman Lahti 2024 Race Day, which further fuels my determination and excitement for the event," Hering says.

Advice for students balancing athletics and studies abroad

Jonas advises students to prioritize time management, set realistic goals, and build a support network when navigating the challenges of rigorous athletic training and studies abroad. Embracing flexibility, imperfection, and learning from challenges can lead to physical and mental well-being.

“Embrace imperfection as part of the process and learn from challenges," Hering summarises.
