Project Manager

Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (Helsinki GSE; https://www.helsinkigse.fi/) is a joint venture where Aalto University, University of Helsinki, and Hanken School of Economics joined forces in 2018 to provide teaching, conduct research, and offer societal impact at the highest international standards. Since its foundation, Helsinki GSE has hired 20 new professors, increased its student intake at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels, improved and widened its educational offerings while increasing the output of high-quality research and producing high social impact at the same time. Helsinki GSE obtained national responsibility funding from the Ministry of Education 2021-2024 and again for 2025-2028. Helsinki GSE founded the GSE Situation Room during the COVID crisis and was instrumental in transforming that initiative to what is now the VATT Institute for Economic Research Data Room.

We are now looking for a

Project Manager

Are you looking for a possibility to work for the common good in the realm of economics?

Helsinki GSE is now looking for a Project Manager whose wide-ranging responsibilities would include being in charge of our efforts to offer economics education to those in secondary education, universities of applied sciences, and anybody else with an interest to educate them in how the modern complex society we inhabit functions. Besides these educational efforts, the Project Manager will participate in maintaining and developing GSE’s inhouse activities.

We are looking for an energetic individual with an interest in higher education in general and economics in particular, and a motivation to improve the world both through education and intensified science for policy work. Join us in shaping the future!

At GSE you can concretely affect the Finnish education system and how scientific research is utilized in public sector decision-making. GSE’s Massive Open Online Course “How the Economy works” (“Miten talous toimii?”) has been a success both among high school students and the population at large, as has the Finnish language version of CORE, an economics principles textbook produced through international cooperation. Working in the VATT Dataroom, GSE researchers exposed the fact that Finnish firms increased their exports to countries close to Russia in reaction to the sanctions imposed on Russia after the attack on Ukraine in early 2022. The new Project Manager will work on maintaining and improving these efforts.

Your role and goals

Your role would be to take the lead, together with GSE professors and management, of further developing the course offering for the wider public; to manage the translation and launch of the new version of the CORE material, and to provide administrative support for GSE as part of the GSE team. You will also play an important role in GSE’s communication efforts.

Your network and team

The Project Manager is part of the Helsinki GSE team which comprises two coordinators who are in charge of the educational routines of GSE and of their development, as well of the Academic Director and Deputy Director, two professors from the GSE faculty. Besides this core team, the Project Manager will work with a variety of partners and stakeholders both at the GSE universities (Aalto, University of Helsinki and Hanken), as well as elsewhere, such as at ministries, municipalities, high schools etc. The work is team work where the Project Manager will be given the responsibility to develop and execute projects.

Your experience and ambitions

We are looking for a motivated individual with

  • the ability to take responsibility and lead projects to conclusion,
  • the ability to to work as part of a team,
  • the ability to to perform and function in an academic environment consisting of faculty and students of three universities,
  • excellent skills in Finnish and English,
  • suitable university degree; a degree or studies in economics would be helpful, but by no means necessary.

In addition, we value experience in similar tasks no matter the sector, though familiarity with the university sector would be an asset.

What we offer

An interesting and inspiring work environment and job description with a large degree of autonomy on one hand, and support on the other hand. At GSE you can be part of a transformation in university level teaching, research and societal outreach, and get an insider’s view on economics education and how the Finnish university system works.
