We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Assistant or Master thesis worker to join our team and contribute to a strategic research project.
Your role and goals
You will work on a project that involves investigating a method based on reinforcement learning and language model for ship energy optimization. You will work on developing a proof of concept based on this method, connect with an accurate simulation model of energy resources – particularly Heating, Ventilation, and Air conditioning (HVAC) and energy storage models such as battery, and train, test, and finetune this proof of concept utilizing data from this simulation model so it performs the optimization well.
You will work together with more senior researchers, and have the opportunity to interact with relevant industries involved, giving you a chance to build crucial connections and networking for your future career.
Your experience and ambitions
You should be enrolled at Aalto University as a master’s degree student who studies computer science, advanced energy systems, data science, or related areas. A good proficiency in English is required to work in this position. Due to the requirement of the research topic, the candidates must be able to work on-site.
We expect candidates to have some background and interest in artificial intelligence, particularly reinforcement learning and (large) language model. You shall have the necessary background to develop the proof of concept, hence experience in software development (e.g., Python) is essential.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills are paramount, combined with effective communication, good teamwork and positive collaboration attitude. Prior relevant industrial or research experience, or published papers in related domains is a significant plus.

The position is a fixed-term position for a maximum of six months from January to June 2025, or as mutually agreed.
Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting (gross) salary for a Research assistant is approximately 2100 EUR/month, while the salary of a Master thesis worker is approximately 2500 EUR/month.
