Workshop Master

The Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture is a Nordic leader in higher education for design, fashion, games, media, architecture, film, art education and art. We are seeking for a service-oriented supervisor for a permanent position, who will also serve as the School's Facility Officer. The job is in line with the general collective agreement for universities MV09 position, including significant school-level duties and supervisory responsibilities. The position is full-time and will begin at the beginning of the fall 2024 semester.

Your duties include

You will work in the technical service for education and research (ARTS infra), which is responsible for the learning by doing environments of the School. ARTS infra is organised around four thematic teams:

  • Soft Materials
  • Solid Materials
  • Photo & Print
  • Manufacturing

You will be working as a supervisor for the Solid Materials team. The team supervisors, along with the Head of Technical Services form the leadership team. The leadership team regularly meets to agree on common guidelines and practices. The supervisor prepares recruitment and budgeting for his/her team in collaboration with the financial and HR services, and the Head of Technical Service. In addition, the supervisor, together with teaching and research staff, ensures that the team's workshops meet the needs of users and that services are delivered efficiently. Solid Materials team is responsible for workshops in wood, metal, ceramics, glass, etc. as hands-on learning environments. In addition to the workshop masters, the team also includes student assistants working on an hourly contract basis. Managing and engaging staff and ensuring the well-being of the team is at the heart of the supervisor's role.

As a Facility Officer for the School of Arts, Design and Architecture you are responsible for planning the use of space required for teaching, research and artistic activities in the School, in collaboration with departments, services and the School's leadership. The Facility Officer acts as the School's liaison with ACRE (Aalto Campus Real Estate) and, together with the School's Head of Finance, prepares the facilities budget. The Facility Officer together with the Head of Technical Service plans measures to develop space utilization and presents them to the School's leadership. The Facility Officer participates in the Aalto University Facility Officer Network.

The successful candidate will understand the needs of users of the workshops and other school facilities and have the ability to ensure that learning environments are appropriate, safe and healthy. In addition s/he will have

  • We hope that you have an appropriate university degree or other equivalent qualifications.
  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to gain the trust of colleagues.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with academic staff, management, students and student representatives, own team and service staff.
  • Good leadership and negotiation skills
  • Good communication skills and experience of technical induction
  • Experience in procurement related to the cost-effective maintenance and development of equipment, facilities and services
  • An understanding of the principles of learning design, organisation and delivery of technical teaching, particularly in the fields of art, design or architecture, would be an advantage
  • You can use your good IT skills to work with a variety of systems
  • Good command of English, Finnish language skills would be an advantage
