2nd year October- November | Contact supervisor to suggest a thesis topic if you already have a topic. You can also browse and apply topics from the list provided by the professors. |
2nd year November - December |
Supervising professor, student and advisor hold a kick-off meeting to make final agreement on the topic and agree on the timetable. After that you can apply the topic approval officially at MyStudies. |
2nd year December- January | Get to know the topic and prepare a research plan. The aim is to present the research plan to the supervisor. Discuss the guidelines for master's thesis evaluation with your thesis supervisor. |
2nd year January- March |
Thesis work and writing. You can take an additional course to support the writing of the thesis (not compulsory). Have a look of the following options: LC-1322 Thesis writing for engineers |
2nd year April |
Around this time, you should be finalizing the thesis and it would be good to agree with the thesis supervisor and advisor(s) when the thesis would be ready. Submit the final version of the thesis to the Turnitin system that will check text for originality. You should also prepare and give the thesis presentation and agree with your supervisor that the abstract of the thesis can be accepted as a maturity test. |
2nd year May |
After you have successfully completed the thesis and your thesis supervisor has approved the thesis presentation and maturity test, you can apply for thesis evaluation through MyStudies. If you have completed all the courses in your master's degree, you can apply for the graduation at the same time. |
Note! You can also design your own thesis schedule, for example if you want to start the thesis already during your summer job. Please consult your academic advisor and/or supervising professor on the matter. |
You can propose thesis topics yourself or you can consult your academic advisor or the professor in charge of your major for further information.
The master’s thesis process includes a presentation of the finished thesis at a time agreed upon with the thesis supervisor. The presentation, or similar event to showcase the thesis, has to be held before you file an application for the approval of the thesis.
You can do video presentation if it is suitable for your supervisor.
Video presentation (Youtube, Vimeo or other)
- A video presentation of 10-15 minutes
- Includes approximately 8-12 powerpoint slides which are explained by you (orally)
- Aalto University (logo and/or name), and names of the advisor(s) and supervisor must be shown in the video (spoken or in the powerpoint slides)
- Your face must be visible at least in some parts of the video
- You must be the person speaking on the video
- Send the link of the video to the supervisor and to Suvi Jämsä (suvi.jamsa(at)aalto.fi) at latest by the deadline for the applications.
The video must be on public display at least until the approval of the Master’s Thesis.
