Additional Instruments at RELab

RELab, located at the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University in Espoo, Finland, houses a number of instruments and equipment to help students and researchers with their academic and applied research and project work. RELab contains instruments related to renewable energy. In addition to the primary instruments and equipment, RELab also houses other instruments in order to further enhance the prospects of renewable energy and energy conversion.
Solar meter at RELab at Aalto University
Amprobe Solar Meter. It has the capability to measure solar radiation through the window.

AMPROBE SOLAR METER

Amprobe Solar-100 solar meter primarily measures the amount of solar radiation. It can also be used for calculations of total energy, efficiency and installation location in solar cells. One advantage of using this solar meter is that, it can also be placed against the window glass in order to measure the amount of solar radiation through the window.

Key features:

  • Unit selection between W/m2 and BTU/(ft2xh)
  • Solar energy display upto 2000 W/m2 or 634 BTU/(ft2xh)
  • MAX/MIN functionality
  • Data hold functionality
  • Remote sensor
Industrial fan at RELab
Industrial fan at RELab. It is used as an artificial source of wind for wind turbines at RELab.

INDUSTRIAL FAN

The industrial fan inside the RELab acts the artificial source of wind for the two wind turbines kept at RELab. The airflow from the industrial fan can be adjusted through a knob. The two-speed fan helps in conducting research with the wind turbines.

Key features:

  • Weight: 41 kg
  • Air flow: 13200 m3/h (ERP)
  • Rotor type: Axial
  • Power supply: 220 V to 240 V
  • Outer diameter: 900mm
Environment meter at RELab.
FLIR EM54 Environment Meter at RELab. It comes with a stand which ensures that there are no anomalous relative humidity measurements.

ENVIRONMENT METER FLIR EM54

FLIR EM54 environment meter is an instrument which provides all the necessary enviroment measurements. It contains a temperature sensor which helps in efficient wet-temperature or dew point measurements. It comes with a stand which makes sure that the meter is never in contact with objects which may affect measurements related to relative humidity.

Key features:

  • Operating temperature: 0°C ~ 50°C
  • Storage temperature: -10°C ~ +60°C
  • Battery life: 120 hours
  • Wet-Temperature measurements: -30°C ~ +50°C, ±3°C
  • Dew Point measurements: -30°C ~ +60°C, ±3°C
Multimeter at RELab.
Multimeter at RELab. It has low input impedance which prevents false readings caused by phantom voltages.

DIGITAL MULTIMETER FLUKE 117

FLUKE 117 Digital Multimeter is a compact instrument which is suited for measurements in trying conditions. It contains non-contact probes which speeds up the measurements.

Key features:

  • Max voltage: 600 V (AC/DC)
  • Current measurement: 20 A
  •  AutoVolt: Automatic AC/DC voltage selection
  • Low input impedance prevents false readings
  • True-RMS for accurate non-linear load measurements

Learn more about RELab

Inside Renewable Energy Learning Lab. Wind turbines and wind blower are visible in this photo. There is a small space, right behind these two equipment where students can relax and discuss over things related to renewable energy, in particular, and whatever they feel like discussing, in general.

Renewable Energy Learning Lab

Renewable Energy Learning Lab, or RELab in short, offers students a unique learning environment. The students can carry out hands-on experimental research with various renewable energy equipment, such as, solar panels and wind turbines.
