Aalto Windows Quick guide
Aalto Windows workstations are comprised of many services: there is Windows itself, different storage services, networks, collaboration services, software delivery, printing, etc. This page will give you an overview of the big picture.
Aalto Home directory
- Personal directory created automatically for every Aalto user
- Home directory can be accessed through Z: drive in Windows
- Desktop and Documents folders are redirected to Home directory and on Windows laptops, they are available while offline. Check the guide on offline synchronization.
- Aalto Home directory has File History enabled so you can restore previous versions of lost, modified or deleted files and folders.
Work directories (network drive)
- Work directories are created for a specific team / group / purpose
- Work directories can be accessed with these instructions.
OneDrive
- Everyone in Aalto has OneDrive account with at least 5TB (5000 GB) quota
- OneDrive has File History too, so you can restore previous versions of files and folders
- OneDrive will log you in automatically in Aalto Windows computers and it can be accessed from the File Explorer, all Office apps and through most save dialogs.
Networks
- Wireless networks on campus
- There are three wireless networks on campus. On Aalto Windows, you should always use aalto (SSID: aalto) as it will give you access to your department’s network
- VPN (Virtual Private Network)
- VPN gives you secure remote access to Aalto network while working outside of the campus. AnyConnect VPN client is preinstalled in Aalto Windows laptops
Email, calendar, instant messaging and collaboration
- Email and calendar can be accessed with ease using Microsoft Outlook. Other clients are not recommended.
- Use Microsoft Teams for your instant messaging and collaboration needs
Multifactor Authentication (MFA, 2FA)
- Multifactor Authentication (MFA, 2FA) is a method of confirming user’s identity with two or more pieces (mobile app) of evidence when signing on to a system or a service.

Software
- Check the self-service portal if you need some additional software. There are over 300 apps ready to install with Aalto licenses and/or configuration.

- Every Aalto Windows workstation has SecurePrint configured automatically
