DIAMANT is cutting edge research project focused on developing a large deployable thin membrane antenna for small satellites. The research will address the challenge of designing a high gain antenna with light weight materials and deployment mechanisms that could be stowed in a very small volume. DIAMANT project is based on an innovative idea with provisional patent filed and global patent filing in progress.

Small satellites, till date are missing large antenna technology. This technology has remain limited to big or large satellites due to larger mass and volume availability. By integrating large antennas, small satellites can play a more significant role in space missions traditionally requiring larger spacecraft, driving innovation in telecommunications, Earth observation, navigation, and scientific exploration. With the oncoming of 5G and 6G high data throughput demand, the research furthers the capabilities of the small satellites keeping the low cost missions and satellites relevant for the mission requirements. DIAMANT project employs meta-material antennas to develop a thin membrane high gain large antenna for small satellites.

The project is funded by Business Finland Research 2 Business (R2B) grant. Therefore, along with technology research, the project also focuses on the commercialization areas for a potential future space company. The team is constantly engaged in conversations with industry experts, investors, customers and partners to explore the best possible use case and building viable business cases around it.

The success of DIAMANT project, will result into a new space company expanding Finnish space ecosystem and providing employment to local talent.
