In Admission Group III, admission is based on the grades obtained in the Finnish Matriculation Examination, IB, EB or DIA/RP diplomas. If you have in addition to the Finnish Matriculation examination taken any subject tests in the IB, EB, or DIA/RP diploma, the best combination score is considered, provided that at least one of the degrees is complete.
The selection is based on an admission index, which is calculated from the grade received on the matriculation examination. Calculation of the admission index for different secondary school final examinations are described in the tables below. The admission index used in admissions is the total score calculated based on the secondary education final grades.
For applicants who complete the International Baccalaureate or European Baccalaureate in the spring of 2025 will be calculated an admission index based on their preliminary grades and if applicable, made a conditional offer of admission, but the admission result will be reviewed after the final grades have been published. If the final grades of an applicant made a conditional offer of admission is not sufficient for admission, the admission offer may be revoked or the applicant may be placed on a waiting list in the appropriate admissions group in accordance with his or her final academic index. If the final admission index of an applicant who hasn’t been admitted is sufficient for admission, they will be admitted even if this means exceeding the original number of student places available.
Minimum grade requirements
In order to be admitted, the applicants must have completed with a pass grade either advanced or basic mathematics test in the Finnish matriculation exam, or equivalent IB, EB or RP/DIA exams. The grades of international diplomas are converted into their Finnish matriculation examination equivalents with the help of the IB/EB/RP/DIA diplomas table below. The total score, calculated from the applicant’s grades in the Finnish matriculation examination or on the IB/EB/RP/DIA diploma, is the academic index used to rank the applicants.
Calculating the scores
The total score which determines the order of admission of the applicants is calculated based on the secondary education final grades in:
- the mother tongue test
- the mathematics test
- the language for which the applicant receives the highest points and
- the two tests for which the applicant receives the highest points.
A test for Finnish or Swedish as a Second Language taken instead of the mother tongue test is regarded equivalent to the mother tongue test. If the applicant has taken two mother tongue exams, the other (better performing) will be calculated as a mother tongue and the other can be calculated as an advanced language.
For applicants who have taken tests of different levels in the same subject (for instance, basic and advanced mathematics), only the grade in favor for the applicant is counted towards the score. The applicants cannot receive points for Finnish matriculation exams tests in the subjects of humanities and natural sciences taken before 2006.
Tie-breaker rules
If several applicants have the same score, the procedure below will be followed to break the tie:
- the applicant who received the most points on his or her equivalent English test
- the applicant who received the most points on his or her equivalent mathematics test
- the applicant who received the most points on the mother tongue test
- the applicant with the most points for the subject most advantageous to him or her out of all the remaining subjects
If there is still a tied score between applicants after the above procedure, they all will be admitted.
