3D Applications

AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design and drafting software for architects, engineers, and construction professionals to create precise 2D and 3D drawings.

3D modelling and rendering software for design visualisation, games and animation.

Integrated CAD, CAM, and CAE software.

3D computer animation, modeling, simulation, and rendering software. It is used to create assets for interactive 3D applications, animated films, TV series, and visual effects.

Blender is a free and open-source 3D computer graphics software tool-set used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, motion graphics, interactive 3D applications, and computer games.

Cinema 4D is the tool package for all 3D artists.

The Adobe Update Package creates its own update from Cinema 4D for its own purposes, which works only with Adobe programs.

The version licensed by Aalto University is available on Macs at /Applications/MAXON/Cinema 4D R20/CINEMA 4D.

CLO is a 3D fashion design software program creating virtual, true-to-life garment visualization with simulation technologies for the fashion and apparel industries.

Aalto University has an EDU license for this software. It authorizes the use of the software only for educational and study purposes and the products created with it may not be transferred to a third party.

Creo delivers the scalable range of 3D CAD product development packages & tools. It takes the products from concept to digital prototype efficiently, precisely and intuitively.

Houdini is a USD-based context for lookdev, layout and lighting and SOP-based tools for configuring Destruction and Pyro FX shots. Procedural Content Creation Tools for Film, TV and Gamedev.

KeyShot is a real time rendering app making animation easy with a wide range of support for 3D file format.

Rhino can create, edit, analyze, document, render, animate, and translate NURBS* curves, surfaces, and solids, point clouds, and polygon meshes.

*NURBS, Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines, are mathematical representations of 3‑D geometry that can accurately describe any shape from a simple 2‑D line, circle, arc, or curve to the most complex 3‑D organic free-form surface. Because of their flexibility and accuracy, NURBS models can be used in any process from illustration and animation to manufacturing.

SketchUp is a 3D modeling computer program for a wide range of drawing applications such as architectural, interior design, landscape architecture, civil and mechanical engineering, film and video game design.

In the School of Arts, Design and Architecture we have a floating license both for Mac and Windows. Current version is 2021. Also V-Ray for SketchUp is included in the default installation package.

Known issues

• Current installation will nag about available update. Please pass, users have no adequate right for update. If an update is needed, faculty can send a request to workstation team.
• The software is currently not installed on Mac class computers. It can be installed manually also to Mac computers by (reasoned) request from faculty.

SolidWorks is a solid modeling computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering computer program.

Course cooperation with the company

The company can see the outputs of the students. If a company wants to use licensed files for production, that plan must be redone from scratch under the company’s license.

Master's theses done with a company 

The company can see the outputs of the students. If a company wants to use the files created under the license for purposes other than evaluating output, that plan must be redone from scratch under the company's license.

Competition 

If part of Aalto's studies, or a competition aimed specifically at students, can participate with an EDU license.

Portfolio 

If the material is part of the studies (has produced study attatiments), the use is allowed when the mention of eg "Coursework made in Aalto University". When the course is made in co-operation with a partner, check the course  agreement or  with responsible tecaher, to see how credit is agreed to be mentioned.
