Access control FAQ
We've gathered some of the most commonly asked questions to Aalto staff about the new access control system below.
To all buildings and spaces which are dedicated to faculty/staff (excluding some special zones).
You can choose a PIN code when registering a access token. If you have already received a access token, you have also received a PIN code. If you have forgotten the PIN code, you can inquire at [email protected].
A PIN code is required for some of the properties when moving outside of opening hours.
Mainly 24/7. Exceptions are decided by every building.
Old access tokens will be collected during 2021.
Lobby services have extra tokens for one-day use by Aalto staff. Please pick up an extra token and activate it on IDM. Return the extra token during the opening hours of the building.
Staff will continue to work as before. In the future, everyone should clean their desk at the end of the day, and collect all personal belongings and store them in a locker.
We also recommended to keep the identity card always on display. This is how we identify Aalto staff from other visitors.
The new access control system enables smoother staff mobility between schools and units. The open campus concept allows the use of common spaces and makes encounters and collaboration easier.
In the future, staff will no longer have to apply for access to the premises of other units. In practice, this means that staff can move more freely within the premises of the various units.
Aalto's internal meetings will also be easier to organize when all employees have wider access rights to the campus buildings.
For Maarintie 6 process stays the same as before.
This change in access control regards only Aalto University owned properties + Micronova (Tietotie 3). New access control policy covers the buildings which are listed in main picture of this page (map).
Access to special spaces is now limited only to persons that tila- or talovastaava have defined.

You can get a HSL card for access control from a HSL service point: https://www.hsl.fi/en/tickets-and-fares/sales-points
To all buildings and spaces that are dedicated to students.
In the future, HSL cards will be increasingly used for getting around in the Aalto University buildings, so please register your card if you are not using it yet.
You can register your HSL card at https://idcard.aalto.fi . You don't need a new card to access the buildings if you already have a HSL card in use.

Move in a group or with a friend from university to access facilities that require a HSL card.
All students have access to guild rooms with a token during building opening hours.
Unions have named individuals with 24/7 access to the guild rooms.
With the exception of access to the School of Chemical Engineering's guild room, which is open from 6 am to 10 pm.

The key manager of the unit / school will be notified of the need for a access token. The key manager determines the rights of the access token. Once the access has been accepted, the visitor can pick up a temporary token from the lobby service.
We don't provide ad hoc tokens anymore.
