Who are you?

Hey there! I'm Thuy Linh Nguyen, and I recently graduated from the International Business Bachelor's Program in Aalto University Mikkeli campus. Throughout my studies, I've been super passionate about marketing and communications, and it's been a thrilling journey exploring this field.

How did you get your internship? Where did you find it? What, in your opinion, were the factors that helped you get the internship?

I found my internship through JobTeaser, the awesome portal of Aalto University, filled with job opportunities exclusively available to Aalto's students. The user-friendly interface and the ability to filter jobs based on preferences like remote work or internships made it a breeze to find the perfect match.

Where did you complete your internship, when, for how long?

I had an amazing time working at MyData Events and Services, which is a branch of MyData Global. My internship lasted for a solid three months, during which I got to contribute my skills to their Marketing and Communications team.

What were your tasks and in which team? What kind of skills did you need in your internship?

My role was a part of the core team dedicated to organizing the MyData conference. It was a fast-paced working environment. I could experience doing tasks such as video editing, managing and planning social media content, handling website updates, and sometimes connecting with partners and stakeholders. My internship helped me hone a range of skills, from technical ones like video editing to softer skills like effective communication and relationship building.

What did you learn?

Let me tell you, my internship was a treasure trove of learning opportunities! Yes, I picked up valuable technical skills, but it didn't stop there. Through regular check-ins and my trusty learning diary, my supervisor guided me towards achieving a healthier work-life balance and personal growth. I learned the importance of effective communication, time management, and fostering positive relationships in the workplace.

What were your expectations (regarding the job or Finnish working life) and were they met?

Honestly, I entered my internship without any specific expectations, keeping an open mind. But I was so pleasantly surprised! The entire team at MyData was incredibly supportive and helpful. The positive work environment allowed me to flourish and surpass any expectations I might have had. It was an experience filled with joy and growth.

What do you expect for the future / what hopes do you have for your future career after graduation?

I think the best thing about the future is that it is filled with endless possibilities. I am not sure which career path I will be choosing, but I know that with the knowledge and learning chances such as this, I will be able to grow and advance further. My hope is to keep learning and growing!

I know the job hunt can be a rollercoaster ride, especially for us international students facing language barriers. But trust me, don't lose hope!

Do you have any tips for other students applying for an internship?

I know the job hunt can be a rollercoaster ride, especially for us international students facing language barriers. But trust me, don't lose hope! A great advice I learned from my mentor is that, building a strong professional network is key. Take advantage of platforms like LinkedIn and don't shy away from attending social events. You will find many Aalto students everywhere and these connections can lead you to valuable guidance and support. Oh, and don't forget to explore JobTeaser as there often are exclusive opportunities. Attending summer projects and courses such as ITP can be a great way to start your professional career, as you will be doing projects for big companies in Finland. Finally, Aalto has a lot of services for career development and you will find the support you need, from cv clinic to internship vouchers!
