My Kauppis Memory: Evening with alumni and many good memories

‘Mikkeli Spirit is in all of us.’
Mari Syväoja and her quote: Mikkeli Spirit is in all of us

I started working at the School of Economics Mikkeli Campus in August 2001. In my work at the study office I meet with all our students several times during their studies. We discuss their courses and learning, but also other issues and that is why I still remember most of them many years after their time in Mikkeli.

The English-language Bachelor-level program has operated at the Mikkeli Campus since 1989. In April 2014 we organized 25th anniversary celebrations of the program in Mikkeli. In addition to the current students, staff and some stakeholders, we invited all our alumni to the anniversary gala. The gala was organized in a mall in the city center for almost 300 guests – most of them our alumni who had been placed to the tables with their own classmates. There were alumni from almost every class of the program and it was heartwarming to see so many familiar faces. Many memories came to mind, and we laughed a lot at them. It was also nice to hear what had happened in our alumni's lives after graduation. There were also several couples…

Together with our alumna Anna Reponen we had made a chronicle of the 25 years of the program. When introducing the chronicle in the gala and standing on the stage, I vividly remember the moment when 250 alumni and students started the song – sung already for years in different Mikkeli student events. That moment proved how important and meaningful the BBA/BScBA Program at the Mikkeli Campus has been to our alumni. “Oi Mikkeli, oi Mikkeli…”

In 2021, we ask former and current members of the School of Business community (especially faculty and staff) to share their memories of the school. These memories will comprise the ‘My Kauppis Memory’ series of stories.
