Refining the plan

After many design variations, we mocked up a full scale layout of Kide's plan.

Kide will have limited space on site, so we spent considerable time developing different options for the stage layout. Some key aspects that were taken into account included:

  • Relation to site and space to comfortably manoeuvre both for pedestrians, event technicians and snow clearing equipment
  • Cover by canopy for weather protection
  • Accessibility for all users via steps and ramp
  • Space available for different types of performance and required equipment
  • Aesthetics, relation between stage and canopy structure: aligned or contrasting
  • Seating options for use by market visitors when no events are taking place

See below for the final plan, and sketches made in the process.

In order to get a feeling of the size of the stage and to test if the dimensions were sensible for the intended use, we made a 1:1 mockup of the stage plan with tape and cargo straps.

Emily Johnson chose Aalto University after finding out that the Master’s programme director at the time specialized in her exact area of interest. In her Master’s studies she wanted to pursue skills to involve the community in the designing and planning process. Since graduating she has worked in a company that provides a community engagement platform made for planners.
