Thesis

The master’s thesis is a 30-credit entity that also includes the maturity test and presentation of the thesis. The master's thesis is a piece of applied research and is written on a topic related to the advanced studies of the degree programme. The key goal of the master’s thesis is solving a problem relevant to the field of study based on existing scientific knowledge in compliance with the principles of responsible conduct of research.

European Mining Course is a joint programme of Aalto University School of Engineering (ENG) and School of Chemical Engineering (CHEM). This means that all admitted students to EMC are first registered and enrolled as degree seeking students of Aalto ENG but, depending on the student’ Master’s thesis topic and on the Master’s thesis supervisor at Aalto, the student’s right to study is transferred to Aalto CHEM when the supervisor is from Aalto CHEM.

NOTE! The Aalto University bylaws are changing 1 August 2024 and a new system will be introduced for thesis management. The master’s thesis topics will no longer be accepted by the Degree Programme Committee. Instead, the supervisor will accept the topic and advisors and the application is submitted on MyStudies. eAge system is closed for submitting the master’s thesis applications on 1 August 2024 and the new functionality on MyStudies will be implemented on 19 August 2024

Master's thesis project

The master's thesis is a project that all students undertake towards the end of their studies. The purpose of this project is to solve a problem related to the field of study on a topic related to the advanced studies of the degree programme.

This project is a 30-credit (ECTS) study attainment. It consists of the thesis report as well as a maturity test, and a seminar or presentation related to the project.

Master's Thesis checklist (more information below)

  1. Find a supervising professor and agree on the topic with them. 
  2. Apply for the supervisor, topic and advisor(s) by filling in the starting information in MyStudies "Thesis" -tab and submitting it. 
  3. Write the thesis following the instructions
  4. Agree on the presentation and the evaluation schedule of the thesis with your supervisor.
  5. After receiving the permission from your supervisor, submit your final version of the thesis in MyStudies. You can find the schedule for when thesis grades are approved by the Degree Programme Committee on the Graduation page of your programme. See the link at the top of this page.
  6. Make sure that you are enrolled as an attending student and that your personal study plan is valid and approved, and you have completed all required studies so that you can apply for graduation.

Evaluation and approval of the master's thesis

Graduation

You can apply for the approval and evaluation of the master's thesis and for the master's degree graduation at the same time if all the studies for your master's degree have been completed and registered.
