Recommended timetable
Here you can find guidelines for timing and planning your studies in Master’s programme in Economics.

Using the Timeline function and timing templates on Sisu
You can time your studies using the Timeline tab on Sisu. Depending on your programme and the year you started your studies, there are also timing templates that you can use to help time your studies. In the Master's programme in Economics, there is a timing template on Sisu for students who started their studies in 1.8.2022 or after.
Recommended timetable 2024-2026
To complete the degree in 2 years it is recommended to spread the courses to each of the 5 periods evenly. This would mean about 12 credits per period, but depending on your choices one period can be heavier than another.
First year
- Applied Microeconometrics I (6 cr), I period
- Capstone: Microeconomic Policy (6 cr), II period
- Macroeconomics: Policy (6 cr), III period
- Elective studies for the programme and the degree / minor
Second year
If you choose exchange studies as a minor, it is recommendable to complete it during the autumn semester of the second year of studies
- Master’s Thesis seminar (6 cr), I-II periods or III-IV periods
- Master’s Thesis and Maturity test (30 cr)
- Elective studies for the programme and the degree / minor / exchange studies
Enrollment to the Master's thesis seminar held in autumn semester by 31.5. (in the previous spring) and to the seminar held in spring semester by 31.10. (in the previous autumn).

The research master courses (Advanced Econometrics, Advanced Macroeconomics and Advanced Microeconomics) are arranged within the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics cooperation. The course details are given on Helsinki GSE website at: https://www.helsinkigse.fi/courses
Research master courses can be taken over two years. If you choose exchange studies as a minor, it is recommended for the second year of studies. Make sure to plan the exchange well in advance so that it fits well with your studies. To complete the degree in 2 years, students are recommended to complete about 60 credits per year.
First year
It is recommended to take at least some of the courses listed below during the autumn and spring terms of the first year. You need to take at least nine of the following twelve courses either in the first or the second year: Advanced Econometrics 1-4, Advanced Macroeconomics 1-4 and Advanced Microeconomics 1-4.
Autumn term
- Compulsory studies:
- Math Camp (August, before period I)
- Advanced Microeconomics 1 and 2
- Advanced Econometrics 1 and 2
- Advanced Macroeconomics 1 and 2 (first or second year)
- Elective studies / Minor studies
Spring term
- Complete at least 3 courses of the following (min 15 cr):
- Advanced Microeconomics 3 and 4
- Advanced Econometrics 3 and 4
