There is a team on my course which is having problems. Should I intervene and if so, how?

• Teamwork issues are normal. Problems within teams are common and unavoidable, and there’s no need to fear or avoid addressing them, even if it might feel intimidating. It’s essential to communicate this perspective to the struggling team as well, reassuring them that challenges are a natural part of teamwork. From a learning perspective, dealing with difficulties can be valuable, as it provides an opportunity for growth. 
• Consider the course learning objectives and the team’s expected level of autonomy. When planning an intervention, reflect on the course’s learning goals, particularly in relation to team autonomy. Is the expectation that teams will resolve their own problems independently? In such cases, it might be best to intervene only when issues are serious. Further, the higher the expected level of team autonomy, the lighter the intervention should be, allowing the team space to manage their own dynamics. However, it’s also important to ensure that the team doesn’t feel it’s being left alone to manage issues. Simple words of encouragement and a follow-up with the team later can go a long way here.  
• Toxic team dynamics are a serious issue. Problems can typically be divided into two broad categories: issues related to project progress and issues related to team dynamics. While the initial steps to address both types of problems may be similar, the nature of the intervention may differ. Team dynamic issues are generally more serious than project-related challenges, as maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment is crucial. A poor project outcome may lead only to a lower grade, but a toxic team environment—especially if it involves unfair behavior—can have lasting negative effects on individual members. 
• If in doubt, seek support. Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re uncertain about how to address a team issue. Colleagues who may have faced similar situations can provide useful insights on how they handled such cases. You can also reach out to pedagogical experts or student counselors at your institution. Often, however, issues that seem complex can be resolved through a serious and constructive discussion with the team. 

• Mielekkäin lähestyminen tapauskohtaista ja ”oikeaa” ratkaisua harvoin on. Tavoitteeksi kannattaa ottaa tilanteeseen sopivan lähestymisen löytäminen 
• Ensimmäinen vaihe on aina yrittää kerätä tietoa siitä mitä on tapahtunut ja mitä tiimi on jo tehnyt. Tähän kuuluu esim.  
• Mikä ongelma tarkalleen ottaen on?  
• Jos ongelma tiimidynamiikkaan liittyvä: kytkeytyykö se tiettyihin henkilöihin, ja ketkä henkilöt ovat siinä osallisena.  
• Onko asiasta jo keskusteltu tiimin / tai sen jäsenten välillä? 
• Jos jotain asialle on yritetty jo tehdä jotain, mitä yritettiin ja mitkä sen vaikutukset olivat.  
• Kannattaa myös yrittää tiedustella miten tiimi itse haluaisi ongelman ratkaistavan (yhteinen keskustelu jossa opettaja mukana, keskustelevat keskenään, jotian muuta…) 
• Jos kyseessä on projektin edistymiseen liittyvä ongelma, tieto on usein helpoin kerätä juttelemalla tiimin kanssa sopivassa tilanteessa, esim. luentotauolla, palautekeskustelussa tmv.  
• Jos kyseessä on ryhmädynaaminen ongelma, voi olla fiksua pyrkiä vetämään yksi, neutraaliksi oletettu tiiminjäseen sivuun sopivassa tilanteessa ja keskustella hänen kanssaan. Tällöin on kuitenkin äärimmäisen tärkeä muistaa että saatat kuulla vain yhden puolen tarinasta.  
• Jos ongelma näyttää siltä että siihen kannattaa puuttua, perusneuvona kannattaa aloittaa pyytämällä tiimiä keskustelemaan asiasta ensiksi itse.  
• Keskusteluun kannattaa antaa vinkkejä: 
• Korosta, että kaikkien tulisi saada mahdollisuus tuoda esille omat näkemyksensä ja huolensa rakentavassa hengessä. 
• Kannusta löytämään yhteisiä tavoitteita ja arvoja: Yhteisten päämäärien ja arvojen tunnistaminen voi auttaa jäseniä sitoutumaan paremmin yhteistyöhön. 
• Mainitse että ongelmatilanteet tiimityössä ovat tavallisia eikä niistä kannata laamantua. Keskeistä on pyrkiä ratkaisemaan haasteet rakentavasti ja nopeasti.  
• Jos tätä on jo kokeiltu tai koet että suurempi interventio on tehtävä heti.  
• Tiimidynaamiset ongelmat 
• Jos ongelma henkilöityy yhteen henkilöön, voi olla fiksuinta käydä hänen kanssaan keskustelu kahden kesken.
